PROJECT FINAL REPORT

Name of Pogramme: Education support to 300 slum children of Rayagada

Implementing Organization: Shakti Organization, Rayagada, Odisha, India.

Project Achievements:

SHAKTI started 12 Education centers in 12 Slums of Rayagada town from 1st Sept.2014. These centers enrolled 300 children of marginalized community, out of them 125 are girls and 175 are boys.

• By impact of the programme, 37 school dropout children became now regular in school and since the initiation of this programme, there is no further dropout.
• 185 students have made improvements in their half yearly examination in Dec.-14.
• In addition to educational focus, as, we emphasized on hygienic practice of students, we 271 students are now regularly cutting their nails and washing hands with soaps before taking food.
• In the March-15 annual exam, our Programme has shown some good impact, 23 students stood within the best tenth in their classes, 46 students got position among first 20 good performers in annual exam in their classes.
• In the March-16 annual exam, 68 children secured more than 60 %, 147 children secured more than 50 % and 85 children secured more than 40%.
• 112 students’ Hand writing style is improved.
• Though the original planed project period was for one year (Sept.-14 to Aug.-15), we extended the period for another 1 year 4 months, till Dec.-16.

From Children’s voice:

Harika, a student of class 6^th told, “my parents never sent me to any coaching class, because of financial constraint, but fortunately, I got the chance and benefited a lot from this free coaching programme, now I am able to compete with my other friends, and stood 2^nd position in my class.

Kumar, a student of Class 5^th shared his experience, “I was an irregular student in my class, I enjoyed playing street games in school hours, but after the Didi’s(Education center Teacher) repeatedly approach (motivation), I am now a regular and good student”.  

Bhavani, a student of class 6^th shared her experience, “I thank to the teacher of our Education center, who has personally taken care of my study and I am now a meritious student in my Basti(Slum) and my mother is proud of me”.

Sukanti, a student of Class 5^th told, “I was afraid of mathematics, now, in the last annual Exam. I got 68 marks out of 100, I am happy now”.

After 2 years 4 months managing the programme, the programme is handed over to the community, i.e. Slum Education Committee to manage the education centers out of their contributions. As they realized the benefits of these education centers to their children, we expect they will manage it seriously. But still out of 14 Education centers, 7 centers successfully handover to the community.

                                                 Education support to slum children of Rayagada

Implementing Organization: Shakti Organization, Rayagada, Odisha, India.

               During the last quarter, the programme was run for one month only, as there was two months long summer vacation in schools, so, with request from of learners, we also made a two months break in the programme. The pogramme resumed again from 16^th June. Due to fund constraint, we have re-opened only 7 centers out of 14 centers. Now, we are having 178 students, who are getting the benefit of our beyond school special coaching initiative. With the support of one of Local printing house, we distributed the writing materials (4 Note Books & 4 Pens each) to 178 students. We have facilitated nine community level facilitation programmes for our students, who secured more than 60 % in the last Annual exam. We are having plan to conduct one orientation pogramme to our teachers on joy full education in the coming month.

               During the March-16, our students appeared in their respective annual examination and the result declared in April-16. Out of our 1^st batch 300 children, 68 children secured more than 60 %, 147 children secured more than 50 % and 85 children secured more than 40% in the examination. It’s a good achievement of our special coaching initiative. We are planning to have the facilitation of those children in their community, who secured more than 60 % in the Annual exam. There will be a short break of two months( 15^th April to 15^th June) of our pogramme during this summer vacation. We are very much thankful to the donors, who supported this programme and the community who has taken the ownership of the pogramme.

Progress Report-4

Education support to 300 slum children of Rayagada

              The education standard of our slum children are now improving, they are now the first benchers in their classes. Our programme is helping them with a lot. In our counseling process, we are boosting their moral. Their parents are now feeling the importance of the education and the ability of their children. Our students are doing home works regularly, answering questions in class, getting good marks in their class examinations. In February-2016, they are going to appear their annual examination. We are sure that, most of them will perform better than their examinations. Now, we are running 14 centers and we are in second year of the programme. We are planning to mobilise funding support from well-wishers again for the second year. Now we are supporting 350 children of the under previlised community of the slums of Rayagada Municipality,Odisha., India. During last qtr., we supported all children with two note books to each. We As a part of our regular intervention, we are focusing on personal hygienic practice of students; nail cutting and hand wash practice, in addition to educational support.

                   During the last quarter our Programme was running smoothly and has good result, the progress of our students is quite encouraging. We already have covered one year starting the programme. We are planning to continue the pogramme for another year. This year, we are convincing children to share partly the cost of pogramme and hope we will succeed to some extent. We have added two more slums this year from 1^st July and started two centers of Education support programme. 50 children are enrolled in those centers from the underprivileged section. Now, all total, we have reached 350 children through this pogramme. The parents are also feeling proud of the education standards of their children. As a part of our regular intervention, we are focusing on personal hygienic practice of students; nail cutting and hand wash practice, in addition to educational support.
