Education on the Streets Program

In a heartwarming display of community spirit and camaraderie, 140 enthusiastic volunteers from Citi Philippines joined forces with 100 vibrant street children for a day filled with laughter and excitement. The event, aptly named "Larong Pinoy Games," took place on July 1st at the Canonigo Covered Court in Paco Manila.

The atmosphere was abuzz with anticipation as volunteers and street children gathered, brimming with energy and an eagerness to engage in traditional Filipino games. The event aimed not only to provide entertainment but also to foster meaningful connections and create lasting memories.

The day kicked off with an opening ceremony that echoed with cheerful cheers and applause. A vibrant kaleidoscope of colors filled the air as teams were formed, comprising both Citi volunteers and street children. The event organizers strategically mixed the teams, ensuring a seamless integration of participants from diverse backgrounds, thereby promoting inclusivity and unity.

Under the radiant Manila sun, the sound of laughter and friendly competition reverberated through the court. From classic games such as "Patintero" (Leapfrog) and "Lawin at Sisiw" (Hopscotch) to the exciting "Tumbang Preso" (Knock Down the Can), participants wholeheartedly embraced the spirit of each game, showcasing their agility, teamwork, and sheer determination.

Beyond the games themselves, the event served as a platform for fostering meaningful connections between the volunteers and street children. Volunteers extended their support and encouragement to the children, serving as mentors and friends throughout the games. The bond that formed between these unlikely pairs was nothing short of heartwarming, exemplifying the power of human connection and the capacity to create positive change.

To fuel the participants' energy and enthusiasm, refreshments and snacks were provided, ensuring everyone stayed hydrated and nourished throughout the day. Laughter echoed in every corner as the participants took a break from the games to share stories, engage in conversations, and savor the delectable treats.

As the event drew to a close, a sense of fulfillment and gratitude lingered in the air. The "Larong Pinoy Games" had achieved its objective of bringing joy, fostering unity, and creating unforgettable memories for both the volunteers and the street children. As the sun set on this remarkable day, the smiles on the faces of both the Citi volunteers and the street children spoke volumes. The "Larong Pinoy Games" had not only created cherished memories but had also laid the foundation for a brighter and more inclusive future.

For the period covered, a total of ten (10) street children composed of five (5) boys and five (5) girls were referred to different recovery shelters. Most of the girls were referred to Tahanan Sta. Luisa, a recovery shelter for physically abused street girls. On the other hand, the boys were referred to Pangarap Shelter Foundation, Nayon ng Kabataan and Ephesus Home in Bulacan.   

There were 111 street children who participated in group counselling while 63 street children were assisted with individual counselling sessions. These children were also provided with case conference and psychological evaluations. Some street children beneficiaries of the Educational Assistance Program (EAP) were also provided with tutorial/homework support.

Also for the period, a total of 124 street children participated in Focused Group Discussions on the different topics of Alternative Education. FGD’s are conducted to assess how the children apply their learnings in their daily life. Among the major behavioral indicators observed among the street children during the reporting period were as follows:

• Show respect towards other children and to adults by using “po” and “opo” and avoiding foul words, and using traditional hand blessing gestures;
• Have reduced engagement in negative behavior such as use of prohibited drugs and other substances, stealing, snatching;
• Have developed confidence in expressing one’s self to others;
• Participate in sessions even without their peers and also arrive on time during sessions;
• Volunteer to perform certain tasks/assignments; and
• Have learned to follow instructions and rules.

However, not all street children participants are able to apply their learning in their everyday lives due to peer pressure. Thus, the social workers assigned are continuously conducting psycho-social interventions (group and individual counselling) among the street children.
