Livelihoods and Sustainability in La Sierra Nevada

This past year, our project continued to strengthen educational and livelihood opportunities for children, teachers, and families on Colombia’s Caribbean Coast, combining academic learning, environmental stewardship, and community-led innovation.

Through hands-on activities and participatory learning, 504 students, 28 teachers, and 54 parents took part in sessions focused on English, environmental education, agroecology, and entrepreneurship. These spaces encouraged curiosity, teamwork, and practical skills that extend well beyond the classroom.

Education in Action
More than 200 children completed 36 hours of English lessons, building confidence and communication skills. At the same time, teachers integrated key environmental themes (such as solid waste management and school gardens) into their regular classes, ensuring learning remained relevant and locally grounded.

Environmental Awareness & Creativity
Students explored their natural surroundings through birdwatching workshops and biodiversity field trips, sparking pride in their local ecosystems. As part of the Taguaventura tourism club, children combined environmental learning with entrepreneurship, creating a local bird guide using digital tools, writing, and illustration. These activities strengthened both digital literacy and creative expression.

Growing Sustainability Together
Across participating schools, eight active gardens and new composting systems were established. These gardens now supply fresh vegetables to school kitchens while promoting sustainability, teamwork, and responsibility. They have also reinforced schools as spaces of innovation, resilience, and community pride.

Together, these activities are helping children and young people develop the skills, confidence, and environmental awareness they need to shape their own futures, while strengthening schools as hubs of learning and community connection.

Thank you for being part of this journey with us. Your support makes this work possible!
