In the rural communities of Colombia’s Caribbean region, many young people grow up with limited access to quality education, few employment opportunities, and little support to imagine futures beyond poverty and instability. Poor internet connectivity, school dropout rates, and economic inequality continue to affect young people across the region, particularly within indigenous, migrant, and rural communities.
In places like Minca, these challenges exist alongside enormous potential. Surrounded by natural beauty and growing eco-tourism opportunities, the region could offer sustainable livelihoods for local communities. Yet many of these opportunities remain inaccessible to local young people due to limited training, lack of resources, and exclusion from the economic growth happening around them.
This project was created to help change that reality by equipping rural youth with the tools, skills, and confidence to shape their own futures.
Working with 504 students, 28 teachers, and 54 parents and carers, the initiative combines education, entrepreneurship, environmental learning, and psychosocial support to strengthen both academic and personal development. Through school clubs focused on English, STEAM subjects, eco-tourism, and entrepreneurship, students are encouraged to explore new skills while connecting learning to their local culture, environment, and opportunities.
The programme also introduces active and creative learning methodologies designed to make education more engaging and practical. Students participate in environmental projects such as school gardens, vocational learning activities, and field trips that broaden their experiences and help them connect classroom knowledge to real-world possibilities.
Teachers play a key role in the initiative and receive training to strengthen their teaching practices and integrate innovative methodologies into their classrooms. At the same time, psychosocial support for students and families helps create stronger support systems around young people, recognising that emotional wellbeing is deeply connected to educational success.
Beyond improving academic performance, the project aims to help young people develop practical and vocational skills that increase employability and open pathways to sustainable livelihoods within their own communities. By linking education to eco-tourism, entrepreneurship, environmental stewardship, and local development, the initiative encourages young people to see themselves as active participants in the future of their region.
Over time, the project hopes to break cycles of poverty and exclusion while creating a model for rural education and youth entrepreneurship that reflects the realities, strengths, and cultural identities of Colombia’s rural communities.
