Returning to School in the New Normal
By Trizah Waiyaki | Operations and Development Director

Our scholars were home for close to one year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. During this period, we supported their academic dreams by providing safe housing, meals, counseling, and individualized tutoring. With the Government's directive to open schools, they have all resumed school under the new COVID-19 guidelines.
The back to school preparations was different from what we have done in the past as we needed to prepare the scholars to study in the safest way possible. This entailed purchasing masks and sanitizers for them and having talks on how to prevent themselves from exposure to the virus. We don't imagine that this will be easy but we're encouraged by the school's commitment to keeping the students safe and our scholars desire to pursue their academic dreams in spite of the challenges occasioned by the pandemic.
Many students in the country are struggling to study in a safe environment and so we're very grateful to our donors whose generous giving has made it possible for our scholars to pursue their academic dreams with all the resources they need to excel and stay safe and healthy.

Pursuing Academic Excellence

Freely in Hope believes that girls deserve equal access to education. Providing girls ample opportunities to pursue their academic goals also has the potential to prevent sexual violence. However, COVID-19 has caused a rise in cases of sexual and domestic violence as socioeconomic disparities are widening, schools are still closed, curfews and travel restrictions are policed, and girls are forced to work and shelter in unsafe places—some are sheltering in place with their perpetrators. Our scholars and their families have been disproportionately affected by this global pandemic which is requiring us to modify our methods.
We are committed to achieving our mission of ending sexual violence during the pandemic.
With all school’s closed, the pandemic has required us to fund additional support outside of our usual programming. Implementing solutions from our communities in Kenya, Freely in Hope has transitioned to an in-house learning community that provides consistent support, professional mentoring, counseling, safe housing, and individualized tutoring.
Your support is helping us fund these additional support systems as schools are still closed across Kenya. Thank you!

As the COVID-19 pandemic has affected all of our communities in unprecedented ways, we have had to adjust in many different ways to continue providing the same quality care and education to our high schoolers.
Due to schools being closed in Kenya and Zambia, we have been finding innnovative ways to strengthen the academic support we provide our scholars with while they are out of school. For our High School scolars, we are utilizing mobile technology that provides learning materials, quizzes, and a feature to ask teachers questions. We also started individualizing tutoring, group tutoring, and attained textbooks for them in Zambia and Kenya! Our high schoolers are all living together in a safe hostel to support their academic and emotional healing during this time. There, they are developing public speaking skills, improving their leadership skills, and taking up responsibility. We've been impressed and encouraged by their growing leadership!
Our program has allowed us to continue providing the necessary eduation to our scholars so that they are aware of how to prevent sexual abuse, especially during a pandemic.
