As part of our health care program here in Ghana we received two German volunteers, Louisa and Lena. Both are medical students in Germany. They both landed in Ghana on the same day and during their 5 week volunteering stay in the health sector they teamed up with some other volunteers from other NGOs to do a free health screening against malaria in the community of Senya Breku, in the Central Region of Ghana. Senya Breku is a rural community, with most of the people living in this area rely on fishing as their main source of income. During this screening, they found that 50% of the total patients examined had malaria - this is shocking and a lot more needs to be done to prevent the spread of it. Due to this, TANF has realised how imprtant our health talks are that we do at schools around Accra on various health issues, including malaria. With more funding we will be able to organise such health screenings also in other parts of the country and we will also be able to organise further health talks accross the country. After the screening, those patients that were found to have malaria were given free medication.
