Winter '19/20 Report

By Mun Maya Rawal | Executive Director

Thanks to our generous donors, dedicated staff, and incredible students. We are as motivated as ever to provide pathways out of poverty and into leadership for the deserving students in Nepal who have lost parents and houses, but not hope for the future.

As of the middle of February 2020, there are a total of 84 students in HCC’s Rural Education Scholarship Program (previously known as the Earthquake Orphan Scholarship Program), including 12 students at local boarding schools, and 9 students in college and university.

This Winter, HCC visited the Dhading district, meeting with 49 students and their families, mostly in the Northern, more remote areas. The team distributed:

  • Warm winter track suits
  • Warm winter woolen caps, socks and scarves
  • school supplies (notebooks, pens, pencils, erasers, pencil sharpeners)
  • personal hygiene materials (toothbrush, toothpaste, handkerchief, hair comb etc.)

The team also:

  • Paid school and hostel fees
  • Provided academic counseling
  • Spent quality time with the children and their families
  • Took in-depth interviews in order to better understand individual circumstances and needs.

This HCC project is managed by graduated and senior students of HCC, who as former beneficiaries help set policies and provide social services including advocacy and emotional support to the supported children.

Kumari* is now 8 years old and is in grade 3.She is from a remote village and a historically marginalized, indigneous community. She lost her mother in the 2015 earthquake. Kumari lives with her father and two older sisters in a small two room house that they built several years after the earthquake destroyed their family home. Her father is a subsistence farmer, and does manual labor to earn money when he can. As she is the youngest child in the family, Kumari gets a lot of love and attention from her sisters. They are very close to each other as well as with their father, who is caring and committed. “I enjoy going to school because I get to play, read, write and draw,” she says. Kumari’s favorite subject in school is science. “I especially love learning about plants, animals and flowers.” She also loves to dance and sing, and her favorite games are skipping games, which she plays in her free time with her sisters and friends. At home, she and her sisters work together to help their father complete the household and farm chores. “When I grow up, my aim is to be a good human and help to take care of my family members and relatives.”

Your contributions directly support Kumari, and many other orphaned and vulnerable children living in rural and impovershed Nepal, to be able to receive a good education at school and remain safe and secure in the context of their own families and communities of origin. Thank you!!!
