Providing school supplies to our students

Our nine new students!
Our nine new students!

This quarter, Bahini Education Project welcomed nine new students into the program, distributed school supplies, and continued our academic partnership with the University of British Columbia.

New Students

In April, we selected nine girls (Sadikshya, Sushma, Subina, Alisha, Nirma, Shristi, Renu, Rabina, and Mahima) from the 8th grade graduating class to join Bahini Education Project. BEP will support them through graduation (grades 9 through 12).

These students were selected based on academic achievement and financial need. Their families would not be able to cover the full cost of secondary education without support. This past month, we delivered school supplies to all nine students. Each student received:

  • A backpack
  • Textbooks and notebooks
  • Pens and pencils
  • A school uniform
  • Shoes

In Nepal, the cost of school supplies and uniforms keeps many girls from continuing their education. When we cover these basics, we remove one of the most common reasons girls drop out.

UBC Partnership and STEM Education

Since June 2024, Bahini Education Project has been partnering with the University of British Columbia's Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering (UBC CHBE) to deliver STEM education to our students. The program is led by student teachers under Dr. Pranav Chintalapati and delivers pre-recorded lessons designed to support students as they transition into the higher grades.

This year, we are welcoming Shuhan Wang as our new teacher. Shuhan is an undergraduate chemical engineering student at UBC, and he will be teaching our students math (algebra, calculus, and trigonometry), science, and English throughout 2026. Our students are excited to learn from him, and we hope his path in engineering inspires them to imagine careers in STEM for themselves.

Looking Ahead

The new school year is underway. We will continue to provide updates on our students' progress throughout the year. Our goal remains the same: to ensure that the cost of school is never what stands between a girl and her education.

Thank you for your continued support of this work.

With gratitude,

Anisha
