Educate and Empower 5000 Masai Girls in Tanzania

By Cosmas John | Project Director

Over the past quarter, the Educate and Empower 5000 Maasai Girls in Tanzania project has continued to create meaningful impact in rural Maasai communities in northern Tanzania. With the support of our early donors and GlobalGiving’s marketing efforts, we successfully raised $44 toward our $6,000 goal. While this is just the beginning, it represents an important first step in building awareness and trust around this initiative.

Since our last update, we have engaged 38 Maasai girls from two villages in community-based learning sessions focused on basic education support, menstrual hygiene awareness, and confidence-building workshops. One of the girls, whom we will call Neema (name changed for privacy), shared that before joining our sessions, she missed school several days each month due to lack of sanitary supplies and low self-confidence. Through the project’s mentorship discussions and hygiene education, she now attends school more consistently and actively participates in class. Stories like Neema’s remind us why this work matters.

In addition to direct sessions with the girls, we held one parents’ dialogue meeting with 22 community members to discuss the importance of girls’ education and long-term empowerment. These conversations are essential in Maasai communities, where cultural and economic challenges often limit girls’ opportunities. We are also working to strengthen our internal fundraising capacity, as we currently do not have professional fundraisers within our organization. Building this capacity will help us reach our $6,000 goal and expand services to more girls in the coming months.

We are deeply grateful to everyone who has supported this project so far. Your belief in empowering Maasai girls is helping lay the foundation for long-term educational change in Tanzania.
