Nurture Africa Vocational Centre Update

By Kevin Murphy | Project Coordinator

Hello,

I am writing this report to you from Uganda and in doing so, want to thank you sincerely for supporting the Nurture Africa Vocational Education Programme. Every moment I get to spend with these young people, reinforces the value of this project through the education the students gain and the opportunity that now exists for them to take control of their individual futures. They truly are an inspiring bunch!!!

Over the past 2 weeks, our vocational students have been visited by a group of Irish students of similar age (16-18yr olds) and have had the opportunity to chat, strike up new friendships and learn about each others lives.

Our five vocational courses (Hairdressing, Tailoring, Catering, Carpentry and Bio-Waster Recycling) have now established their own social enterprises. As the students learn, they makes products and offer services which can be sold in or offered to the community. Income earned, is channeled back to the Vocational Centre and supports its operation. The Irish students had the chance to explore this model and am delighted to report that they have been blown away by the vocational students creativity. The connections created will hopefully last for a long time!

During my time here, I had the chance to meet with Irish Ambassodor, Kevin Colgan, who spoke so positively on the impact of vocational education. 77% of Uganda's approximate 46 million population are under 25 years of age. The unfortunate reality is that a third level qualification will not result in employment for the vast majority. The learning of skills however, in construction, the motor industry, catering, hairdressing and many more, offer young people a route into employment or self-employment. Ultimately this leads to an income and a better standard of living as they enter adulthood. To date over 400 students have graduated from this vocational training centre and our team here is currently working with 300+ on site.

On behalf of these students, I want to express sincere thanks for your committment to their education and future.
