Educational support for young girls in Namakkal is encouraged with special focus on girls living with grandparents and widowed mothers. It is the culture of the community especially young girls from the lower caste are stopped from schooling at an early age and are married off early. A bride price is rewarded to the care takers that even marriages are arranged with aged men. This month article focuses on the experiences of two orphan girls who were followed up from their middle school are now in their nursing courses.
Sirandhini is the third daughter of a widowed mother who also is affected by a chronic ill health. Sirandhini has two elder sisters and one younger brother and her mother forced had forced her eldest sister to stop schooling at the age of 13 years and made her work in the spinning mills. After the first daughter's marriage, her mother wanted Sirandhini and her second sister to work, but both were adamant to study and her second sister after her 12th and while doing her college was married. But Sirandhini wanted to do nursing, one with the interest of serving others and the other to help be independent. There were some challenges within the family that even forced her also to take the same path of marriage but was rightly counselled and followed by the field team of Buds of Christ in helping her secure a course in nursing from a community college. Her mother was also counselled as her consent was needed for her to be part of it. Now Sirandhini has completed her 6 months in her Nursing course and has one more year to complete. On meeting her recently, she proudly expressed
"I would have followed the same situation as my sisters ,but now I am bold enough to be assertive and express myself about my desires and dreams. Thanks to the support I received from Buds of Christ at the right time"
Devi is the second daughter and is brought up by her grandparents. She has been good in her studies and being the custom of the community ,arrangements were being made for her marriage after completing her schooling ,12th standard. As she was 18 years ,the grand parents were also interested to get her married. But Devi wanted to continue her studies and sought support from Buds of Christ and so she was referred for Nursing through the community college. She is now very happy and her grandparents have also been supportive in his decision.
"if Devi did not have this option ,she would have been married as many of our relatives tried to change our minds in telling us that as we are old ,the best decision is to get her married. But now I am happy ,she is learning a course that will help her to be independent".-expressed Devi’s grandmother.
We thank GlobalGiving in helping us make these differences in the families ,where most of the parents or care takers have not even completed schools. Our sincere thanks to all the donors and well wishers in making the lives of the young girls bold to face the future.
