Bharathi is 15 years old, studying class 10. She has scored over 90% in all her subjects. Bharathi’s mother lost her husband 12 years back due to an illness and that left the family be dependent only on government supports and subsidies. Bharathi’s mother works as an agricultural coolie labour and earns less than $2. The sad state is that she is not able to get even that coolie labour work because most of the lands near her villages are made in to housing plots due to lack of water and rain.
Bharathi dreams to become a nurse, she expresses “As a nurse, I will give the best care to all those are ill and will strive my best to give the best comfort one expects during illnesses”. When asked why she has set such a dream, she expressed “I don’t have a father, my mother goes out for coolie work and when I am sick I was always alone. I understand how it is to be alone when you are sick. That is the reason; I want to give my best care and comfort to those who are sick and those who don’t have someone to take care”.
Bharathi is supported for her fees, uniforms, school bag, guides and notebooks. Educational support is the first step towards empowerment of girls.
