Thank you for your generous donation to GlobalGiving’s East Africa Hunger Relief Fund. The East Africa region is in a race against time, and your donation is making a difference.

Several countries in the region are experiencing the worst drought in 40 years, and in some cases, simultaneously confronting armed conflict and inter-communal violence. Food prices and supply disruptions are making the situation dire for these communities.

Since you donated, the East Africa Hunger Relief Fund has supported four grants to high-impact and community-led nonprofit organizations at the forefront of this crisis. These locally based nonprofit partners have experience and expertise to respond in the region and within their communities.

Here is a short description of some of the critical work you’ve supported:

  • Horn of Africa Development Initiative (HODI) is responding to the unprecedented drought in Kenya and its impacts on access to food, health, and income by providing water and cash grants to families. Your contribution will help HODI improve nutrition, provide school lunches, and develop an approach to the crisis that is sensitive to conflict and other regional factors.
  • Adeso has a strong history of working in Somalia. The organization is providing much-needed access to food and water across the country, including in small and hard-to-reach villages, as people in parts of Somalia are on the brink of famine.
  • Facilitating Action for Community Empowerment (FACE) is focusing on the needs of flood-affected communities and people who are internally displaced in South Sudan. Their response includes distributing food and other essential items like water and hygiene supplies.
  • Meseret Humanitarian Organization (MHO) is responding to the complex situation in Ethiopia, where people face drought, food insecurity, and conflict in parts of the country. MHO is focusing on longer-term food security and livelihood projects and providing emergency nutrition, water, sanitation, and hygiene supplies.

Your support of the GlobalGiving East Africa Hunger Relief Fund powers community-led responses, and it means these organizations will get critical resources to prevent a catastrophe. Your contribution will truly make a difference. As the situation evolves and our partners’ incredible work continues, we will share another update about how your donation is supporting people in need across the region.

With gratitude,

Sarah + the GlobalGiving Team

About GlobalGiving’s Disaster Response

When a disaster strikes, recovery efforts led by people who live and work in affected communities are often overlooked and underfunded. GlobalGiving is changing this reality. Since 2004, we've been shifting decision-making power to crises-affected communities through trust-based grantmaking and support.

We make it easy, quick, and safe to support people on the ground who understand needs in their communities better than anyone else.

They were there long before the news cameras arrived, and they’ll be there long after the cameras leave. They know how to make their communities more resilient to future disasters, and they’re already hard at work. GlobalGiving puts donations and grants directly into their hands. Because the status quo—which gives the vast majority of funding to a few large organizations—doesn’t make sense.
