Thank you for your generous donation to GlobalGiving’s East Africa Hunger Relief Fund. Catastrophic levels of hunger persist as violence and the impacts of the climate crisis challenge communities in Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan, Ethiopia, and other East African countries.

Your support of the East Africa Hunger Relief Fund has been critical in meeting the needs of communities facing famine. These include access to safe water and medical services, assistance for people who have lost their livelihoods due to drought, and support for women and children, who are often most at risk of hunger.

Thanks to your generosity, five trusted nonprofit organizations are receiving grants from the fund to expand their programs serving communities across East Africa.

Here is a short description of some of the critical work you’ve supported with your donation:

  • Agro-Pastoral Charity Organization (APCO), based in Somalia, is combating food insecurity through tree planting, activities that support women, and cash assistance for people who are poor and in need. These activities are critical in APCO’s fight against the causes of food insecurity.
  • Nomadic Assistance for Peace and Development (NAPAD), based in Somalia and Kenya, offers multi-purpose cash programs, kitchen garden farming, and school feeding programs, which support displaced populations often overlooked in moments of crisis. NAPAD also has water, sanitation, and hygiene programs in Galgaduud, Somalia, which is a highly food-insecure region. Aware of the increasing food insecurity in Ethiopia, NAPAD teams are exploring ways to fill gaps in aid access along the borders of Kenya, Somalia, and Ethiopia.
  • Southern Sudan Healthcare Organization (SSHCO) has been operating a health clinic in the village of Maar, South Sudan since 2008. The clinic provides nearby communities with health care services, including maternal health and sanitation. The clinic also offers nutrition programming for internally displaced South Sudanese who experience significant challenges in accessing nutritious food.
  • Tiruzer Ethiopia for Africa (TEA), based in Ethiopia, focuses on building water wells and helping insecure communities cultivate nutritional sources of food. The organization is also working in Tigray, expanding its activities in primary education, water and sanitation, primary health care, rehabilitation, and community-wide reconciliation and peacebuilding.

Your support of GlobalGiving’s East Africa Hunger Relief Fund is powering community-led responses and delivering life-saving aid to communities across East Africa. The need remains enormous. Despite global efforts last year, 22 million people in East Africa were acutely food insecure at the start of 2023. Current drought trends in the Horn of Africa have exceeded the conditions of the 2011 famine in which hundreds of thousands of people died.

As the incredible work of GlobalGiving’s partner community continues, we will share more updates with you about how your donation is making a difference. Until then, we remain immensely grateful for your generosity.

With gratitude,

Kyra + the GlobalGiving Team

About GlobalGiving’s Disaster Response

When a disaster strikes, recovery efforts led by people who live and work in affected communities are often overlooked and underfunded. GlobalGiving is changing this reality. Since 2004, we've been shifting decision-making power to crises-affected communities through trust-based grantmaking and support.

We make it easy, quick, and safe to support people on the ground who understand needs in their communities better than anyone else.

They were there long before the news cameras arrived, and they’ll be there long after the cameras leave. They know how to make their communities more resilient to future disasters, and they’re already hard at work. GlobalGiving puts donations and grants directly into their hands. Because the status quo—which gives the vast majority of funding to a few large organizations—doesn’t make sense.
