East Africa Hunger Relief Fund

Thank you for your generous donation to the East Africa Hunger Relief Fund. Your contributions to this GlobalGiving Fund are making a big difference, especially now as our partners respond to devastating floods across Somalia, Ethiopia, and Kenya. 

The floods come during a heavier rainy season alongside the global El Niño phenomenon. This weather has contributed to deeper food insecurity and displacement, especially in the context of funding cuts for international food aid. We visited many of our partners in Kenya and Ethiopia earlier this year and witnessed the power of supporting community-led responses in the region. 

Since our last report, donations from the East Africa Hunger Relief Fund have supported three grants to high-impact and community-led nonprofit organizations at the forefront of addressing East Africa’s food crisis—and now the El Niño-triggered floods. 

Through a grant from this fund, you supported the work of GlobalGiving partner Gift of the Givers. Here’s what they had to say about the current situation:

“Your immediate support is crucial for Gift of the Givers in addressing the dire humanitarian crisis triggered by El Nino's devastating floods in Somalia…With 90% of businesses closed, Bardhere [city] faces economic decline, amplifying threats to overcrowded settlements and escalating disease outbreaks. Urgent intervention is vital.” - Waqful Waqifin Foundation (Gift of the Givers Foundation)

Here is a short description of some of the critical work you’ve supported: 

• Nomadic Assistance for Peace and Development (NAPAD) is in Somalia, providing clean water, life-saving non-food items like hygiene kits, as well as procuring and distributing mosquito nets to over 3,000 vulnerable community members to mitigate the risk of vector-borne diseases such as malaria. Additionally, in Ethiopia, NAPAD will aid the affected riverine villages in Dollow by providing food aid, water, and hygiene services.

• Waqful Waqifin Foundation (Gift of the Givers Foundation), has been working in Somalia since 2004 and is now helping to provide sandbags, food, emergency shelter, latrines, plastic sheets, jerrycans, clean water, and motorized boats for evacuations in Somalia. Gift of the Givers has significant experience in disaster response across the African continent and beyond. 

• Horn of Africa Development Initiative (HODI) is leading a response to flooding in northern Kenya—specifically Marsabit, an area affected by serious food insecurity as well as conflict. HODI aims to support approximately 200 households—over 1200 people—with essential items like food, blankets and water disinfectants. Marsabit County has faced both devastating drought and flooding in recent years.
