One vital part of DoveLewis’ community initiatives is something the general public really doesn’t see. We are an accredited teaching hospital by the American Association of Veterinary Clinicians. As such we are the most qualified in our area to offer continuing education (CE) to the veterinary community and we take great pride in doing just that.
We provide free “Third Thursday CE Rounds” every month, travel the state to provide veterinary CE opportunities to other communities, provide internships and externships to doctors and students, produce a great case-specific publication for veterinarians and technicians called VetWrap, and produce a veterinary teaching website called On the Floor @Dove. We are available every day for free “consult” calls from area veterinarians and technicians with questions about patients they have in their clinics.
We also conduct a large, free annual veterinary conference that is always well attended by doctors, technicians and practice managers. Additionally, we provide free workshops to the public such as Pet First Aid, Pet CPR, and Caring for Your Aging Pet, for example.
The bottom line is that we want to keep offering the best in emergency services along with our long-standing community programs. A lot goes on behind the scenes at DoveLewis just in order to quietly meet our desire to help the veterinary community in any way possible within our mission.
While you have some options for your pet’s emergency needs, Portland really doesn’t have many options for those special community programs and educational initiatives offered by DoveLewis. Portland has a great veterinary community and we consider ourselves partners with the Portland Veterinary Medical Association. Only your support will allow us to continue offering these special programs and educational services.
I am happy to report that DoveLewis was honored yesterday as the 6th Most Admired Non-Profit in Oregon by the Portland Business Journal. Out of the last seven years DoveLewis has been in the Top Ten six times (we are pretty sure a computer glitch occurred that other year). This is a huge accomplishment, especially considering the state of Oregon has over 21,000 non-profits. As with the other six times I was honored to accept the award on behalf of all of you and our Board of Directors.
