People with disabilities in Puerto Rico face poverty and isolation due to limited education and scarce job opportunities, ultimately depending on family members or government aid to survive. Together, we can train and empower them by providing vital life skills to achieve economic freedom and improve their living conditions. Your support can open doors to hope and promote sensible, inclusive communities where people with disabilities can thrive and have the opportunities they deserve.
People with disabilities confront multiple barriers (education, employment, transportation, architecture, healthcare, social, limited essential services) that limit their full development and independent living possibilities. This limited access to education and essential services puts them at a clear disadvantage upon living self-sufficiently and entering the job market (employment rate of PWDs in PR is 23.5%) resulting in higher poverty levels, social isolation and higher dependency rates.
Your support through Global Giving will provide a comprehensive capacity building program to help people with disabilities, of underserved communities, obtain independent living services and valuable job skills that will improve job readiness and retention rates on employment, consequently minimizing their economic dependence, promoting their personal development, active community participation and workforce integration.
100 people with disabilities who obtain independent living and employment skills will gain a sense of purpose, improve self-esteem, feel empowered and self-determined, benefit of career growth, financial independence, autonomy, improved mental health, social inclusion and reduced economic reliance on family support or government aid. An inclusive workforce encourages diversity and empathy, reduces discrimination and promotes accessibility and systemic changes for their inclusion in society.
