Ending Period Poverty: Keeping Girls in School and Restoring Dignity
The Ending Period Poverty initiative at Mupangayi Secondary School in Shurugwi District, Zimbabwe, addressed the challenges faced by schoolgirls who struggle to access adequate menstrual hygiene products due to financial constraints.
Without access to sanitary pads, many girls experience embarrassment, loss of self-esteem, and the risk of missing valuable learning time during their menstrual periods. Some are forced to resort to unhygienic alternatives, including pieces of old cloth or cow dung, compromising their dignity, health, and well-being.
Through this initiative, WICO provided sanitary pads to the girls for the three-month school term, helping them manage their menstruation with greater dignity, confidence, and comfort. This support contributed to creating a more inclusive learning environment where girls can participate in their education without the added burden of period poverty.
While this intervention made a meaningful difference, the need remains significant. Continued donor support will help ensure that more girls have access to essential menstrual hygiene products, enabling them to attend school regularly, protect their health, and pursue their education with confidence.
Together, we can end period poverty and ensure that no girl’s education is interrupted simply because she cannot afford sanitary pads.
