Dear SoulGives Supporter,
Poor dental hygiene remains a widespread but often overlooked publichealth challenge in Mexico, especially for children growing up in poverty. National data show that 44% of children ages 1–9 have untreated cavities, a rate driven by limited access to dentists due to the lack of a national health insurance that provides dentistry, the high cost of basic supplies, and diets heavy in sugary drinks.
In many lowincome communities, children’s teeth decay early and rapidly, affecting not only their health but also their confidence and school performance. Yet parents can make a meaningful difference even with few resources: brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, reducing sugary beverages, encouraging children to rinse with clean water after meals, and seeking out free or lowcost community dental treatment when available. With support and understanding, families can protect their children’s smiles and give them a healthier, more confident future.
Dental pain is invisible until it becomes unbearable. For many children in Cozumel’s lowincome neighborhoods, that pain is a daily reality—cavities so advanced they struggle to eat, sleep, or focus in school. Their parents aren’t neglectful; they’re doing their best in communities When families don’t have access to appropriate basic hygiene education, small problems quickly become lifelong health issues.
Every child deserves to smile without pain. In the underserved neighborhoods of Cozumel, many children suffer from preventable dental problems simply because they have not been taught essential hygiene education. In Cozumel’s underserved neighborhoods, many parents wait to take their children to the dentist until the pain is unbearable. By then, the cavities are so severe that the only affordable option is to pull the tooth. When a child loses a tooth too early, the surrounding teeth shift into the empty space, creating longterm problems with chewing, speaking, and proper jaw development.
Our dental education program stops this cycle by teaching families simple, affordable habits that prevent cavities before they start. Our program teaches parents and kids how to protect their teeth with simple, affordable habits—brushing correctly, choosing healthier drinks, and preventing cavities before they start. We are trying to reach more families, provide proper supplies, and give children the chance to grow, learn, and thrive without the burden of dental pain.
Your support has turned knowledge into health, and health into opportunity.
thank you,
Gary Scheirman
