PROJECT TITLE : CYCLONE VARDAH RECOVERY FOR TAMILNADU FISHER FOLK

PROJECT SITE    : Anzari Nagar, Kanchipuram.

DISASTER MANAGEMENT TRAINING: During the modern age of  this world this Anzari Nagar of Kancheepuram district is a fishermen village. It is a small village which is having no any basic comforts. Fisher folk People here in this village. For hundreds of years people of this village are doing the fishing work as their source of income. They are not having any knowledge of education. People here in this village depend on their work and the sea. They are fishermen families. Many times have met the flood and cyclone disasters. Actually the young generation living here has no idea about what shall they do next? This is the short history of this place. Cyclone found many years ago in this area destroyed many huts where they lied, their possessions, Traditional Boats Kattamarans, fishing net etc. After this cyclone disaster hit that generation had no any idea about that generation should live in a protected manner. There fore they were wandering like gypsies in the sea- shore areas in the midst of hot sunlight and rain fall, they met many difficulties. They had not known any alternative ways. In the earlier years our ancestors lived so. Therefore the people of the next generation understood their situation. They did not like the coming generation should meet severe difficulties like them. Therefore they began to plant many saplings. They felt we lived with very bad situation and suffering much with severe heat and heavy rain and flood disasters. With that good idea they reared the plants like their own children. How these plants have attained the stage of fruit yielding condition. Therefore those fisher men also began to do their fishing work for their livelihood condition in the midst of all difficulties. These trees day by day began to make green the village itself. In this grown condition by their hard efforts cyclone ‘’Vardah’’ occurred every thing whatever it met trees, plants, climbers, buts, buildings, filed houses for their living and they lived under the branches of tree. Their hearts were broken into hundreds of pieces because the Cyclone Vardha devastated every thing available for their living. All trees were up rooted. Every where the Carbages were found as heaps. Really it was an abnormal condition. All people in this village we found quietly frustrated.

SEARCH, RECOVERY & MOCK DRILL AFTER THE DISASTER : Being destructed the villages, uprooted many trees and made them into pieces, cyclone Vardha did not leave the cattles also. Vardah tormented them too. Many lives found as dead with in the demolitions of huts, Carbages of the broken tree branches, with in the rubbishes and with in the sand heaps of lying areas. Many people were found sad as they had lost their close relatives children, parents etc.. Due to the accumulation of broken tree branches pathways and routes were blocked. Many fisher men were found with anxiety and much descries. Even the Ambulance came there they could not find the route and pathway to reach the victims. Most of the affected people were found hop less and pathetic. They were found helpless. This situation realized the people’’ we are for our people! We must recover ourselves. According to the Tamil proverb, ‘’Calmness after Cyclone’’ people had some hope about reaching the calm atmosphere. But with much sorrow they had lost their mental strength etc. At first every one of them there were in need of self confidence and helping tendency. In order to help ourselves and serve others we need self confidence and strong mind. Without any agitation lamentation and crying we must search our persons, cattles, birds and articles we missed. During that occasion we must use torch lights or candles to get the good result during our search when we use the torch light or candle us must deeply look into the tree branches and demolitions etc. If there are any lives with in those areas they would move any organ of their body to get the immediate help. So we can easily find them. Following this we must also ask a question, ‘’is there anybody else?’’ with a loud voice. Then somebody many answer is with a murmuring voice. So must remove the demolition carefully. We can also ask somebody else to help us. When we only are along to help somebody we must carry his body without any hesitation. Also we must hold the backside of his head with out hand and with our left hand we can hold his legs. So the helping person would feel free when he helps a diseased person. In this manner an injured person who was unable to walk was carried to the route where Vanes, Ambulances and cars go when 4 or 5 people jointly help together they can take a thick dhoti or saree and at the 4 edges along with the dhoti or saree keep up. Now we can easily carry the disaster affected person. Like wise this keep when there are two or three person 2 can join their hands together and form a chair like apparatus by holding their hands with each other and the affected person can be seated upon that form and he can be easily carried to the necessary place or to the ambulance for further treatment. If we do so with courage we can protect our selves and also the other victims with us.        

FIRST AID TRAINING:

                 Nobody knows where the accident would happen, when it would happen how it would happen. Also we don’t know what would be the result of that accident. When we meet an accident usually we would go to the hospital. Before we go to the hospital or we take somebody to the hospital, some important helps to be done. If a person has the head injury and severe bleeding following that he turns to an unconscious condition. What shall we do to him at first? At first we must find in which portion of the bleeding? How far the would is deep? At first we must take steps to control the bleeding. For that we must get a clean and fine cloth. If must be folded twice or twice and pressed upon the bandage shall be made tightly. To some people their body will change to the child condition. During that occasion we must but the palm and sole of the injured we with our hand and make his body hot. Over his body and he would soon turn to during the disaster some people would turn to the unconscious condition. Some people’s teeth will join together. We shall because some persons would bite their tongue or lips. In order to avoid this problem, we must recover the patient from this condition. Also we must loosen the tight dresses of the victim. Sometimes a huge crowd will be found. In order to make good ventilation, we must ask the surrounding crowd to disperse. It would be much helpful for the patient. Also we must make extra ventilation for the patient with the help of fan or moving the news paper or moving a fine cloth near his face etc. In addition to this we must check the pulse rate of the patient so as to know if it is in normal condition to do this we can check the pulse rate of  the patient by holding his wrist with the help of our fingers. If it is not recognized we can check the pulse of the patient by keeping our two or three fingers upon the temples of the fore head of the victim the pulse rate is not found still, we can provide artificial respiration to the victim. If we plan to do this, we must take a clean and fire cloth and fold in twice or thrice and keep it upon the mouth of the victim exhale our breathing in to the mouth of the victim. Following that we must give pressure at the chest of the disaster affected victim with our two hands. If we do so, there will be the possibility to make the heart beat of the victim as active. After doing all these First Aid activities, we must carry the patient to the hospital immediately. If a person has met an accident and gets injured and found with bone fractured at his hand or leg we must not left up the injured hand or leg. At first we must check where the fracture is found. Being the fracture we must join the fractured bones gently and upon the fracture and below the fracture keep straight wooden sticks or foot scales and make a tight bandage surrounding the wooden stick or foot scales with a clean and long cloth. If the victim is found fractured at his hand a cradle form knot can be made surrounding his neck and hand. So the patient would feed better than the previous condition. Then the disaster affected victim can be taken to the hospital.

DRINKING WATER TEST:        

                                        Drinking water is a necessary thing for every human being without food man can live for a few days. But living without drinking water will lead the man to dead condition. Not only for men but also for all animals, birds, shrubs, small plants, weeds, creepers and trees water is a necessary thing to live. Once in our country three times rain fell. But now a days even the seasonal rain also fails to fall. The reason for this failure of rain fall is we don’t love nature. Once upon a time in our Tamil Nadu state there were 33.65% forest areas.  But now only we have 16.5% forest areas. As the people destroys the natural resources rain fall decreases year by year. For our comfort we destroy forest and construct building and factories. If here are enough forest areas then only we will have the enough rain falls. Because of the destruction of forest areas agricultural lands, rivers, ponds and lakes are drying. Many agricultural lands are destroyed. Animals in the forest also come towards the human living areas, because of the scarcity of water in forest areas. It causes problem to the human beings. As we failed to love the Nature now we are struggling for our livelihood. Of all waters rain water is the tastiest and purest water. But the quality of water changes according to the place where if falls water flowing in mountain areas comes through herbal plants flows as falls with the medicinal values. Rain water falls in rivers and ponds is polluted and loses value to be  drunk by human. When people drink this water, it spreads many contagious diseases to men. Men must drink 2.5 to 3 lit.. Water per day. It must be pure to buy water for money. Therefore we must know ‘’ How is the quality of water? What are the contents of it? Is it impure to defile our health?’’ These must be known by Filed Water Test. We explained the same with practical demonstration and many things about water were known to the people there at the site. Also we explained people that we must boil well the water it would be healthy for us. Finally they felt vote of thanks to the GlobalGiving aided project staff team.

DISASTER MANAGEMENT TRAINING : When we talk about disaster in this generation, everybody thinks about the Tsunami in this occasion. This Japanese term ‘’ Tsunami ‘’ makes shock all people in this world. Thousands of lives died during that Tsunami. Actually Tsunami has killed many lives such as men, women and also numerous children. Still not only in coastal areas, the other areas are also affected Rain and Flood affected many areas of Tamilnadu. Of which Kancheepuram, Chennai, Thiruvallur districts were severely affected during the last months of the last year 2016. In these areas cyclone ‘’Vardha’’ made a severe attack in many places peoples possessions, basic can forts of the village Health condition. Kancheepuram coastal areas were already affected by the cyclone ’’ Tsunami’’. In this bad situation cyclone ‘’Vardha affected heavily   the same locations again with much force. In these village areas many Herbal trees were found. Those also fell down by the strong effect of cyclone ‘’ Vardha’’. Those were considered as the treasures of the village. All those trees were destroyed with in a few minutes. On every direction heaps of fallen trees, damaged huts and heavy floods so as to search the roads and streets with in a short period of time all destructions, demolitions and damages happened. All these were dislocated. Most of the times fishermen are rejected. Again it was a great disaster for them. Before this cyclone disaster people had some high expectations and gladness about celebrating the New Year, Pongal festivals. But it was a great shock and huge loss to them. These were no room to search if there were any livelihood articles, or money or important records etc? They didn’t know where they should search their parents. They did not have any idea. Even they did not have any time to weep and cry? Every where it was seemed as fresh, fertile and good and healthy Now every thing is seemed as rubbish and dust and wastes. They had not time even to weep and lament. They had the great expectation of some body would come and protect them? They had no even any place to protect themselves. They had been in desperate condition. This was the condition and situation for most of the people at kovalam. In order to help and protect them they needed humanity.

MOCK DRILL TRAINING FOR SEARCH & RESCUE PROGRAMME: Disaster will be of a kind or many kinds. When huge leaves are formed and when they go back again it would go with all the lives there. When great fire there When a flood is formed anywhere it would cause the fire to a distance of many. But during the damages to the distance of many kilometers due to the velocity of the wind. Time to time the velocity of the cyclone would increase and cause greater damages than the condition. Speed of the cyclone increase gradually during the hit of cyclone. It would be from 200 – 300 k.m. per hour. All of a sudden this cyclone destructs many lives, their possessions, small and huge articles, great buildings. Roads and streets, damages the low lying areas and throw away many people and articles into corners. We have a great history about the cyclone formed in year 1963 at Ramanathapuram area. During that cyclone many lives died near by is lands and also at the sea shores of cyclone. Many movable and immovable articles were damaged during that occasion. Many people met a great loss every where. Therefore it was a great disaster that they did not ever meet before in their lives. In such situation, it is very much necessary to begin the recovery works as soon as possible. Those who drowned in water were expecting the helps of the people who were in the sea – shore. Nobody looks at the people live in the upstairs or such high places. They can not see those people also, because that situation would be hard so. Many times steps to the upstairs would have been damaged much. In that situation somebody is entangled within the demolitions of steps. It would be hard to recover them because easily we can’t see those people. In order to recover a person who is entangled with in the demolitions. In order to recover him a person goes there. He could not trace the person who is entangled. The helping person makes a load voice and goes to wards the demolitions. As there is very dark one who wants to help throw some thing upon the float and creates noise. Following that are that is with in the demolitions also throw vessels being found near him. This voice helps the volunteer to know the presence of living person with in the demolitions. That is why the volunteer makes the voice repeatedly and goes closed to the victim who is among the demolitions. When the volunteer comes very closer to the victim, he creates courage within himself and talks to the victim to remove him fear and creates confidence within him by saying that he would be provided immediate treatment. Following that he removes the demolitions which are found surrounding the victim and the volunteer carries the victim upon his down to the ground floor. As it was a high place, the volunteer carried the person (victim) upon his shoulder, hugged the victim’s body in a safe manner with his two hands and got down safety. The volunteer got down safety with the victim as he was holding properly the victim with out any defect. Then the victim was carried safely to the place where the medical treatment was provided for him. In a ground floor a disaster affected person was found entangled with in the demolitions. He was carried to the place of treatment with the help of 4 persons by using a long bed sheet for the victim. In the length wise the bed sheet was rolled up to certain distance along with long wooden sticks or 2 metallic bars. Now the stretcher like formation is ready to carry the victim who got injure. By this way the patient was carried in a protected manner. Also a person who was entangled in the help of two persons by joining their hands made a chair like formation and the disaster affected victim was seated upon that and he was brought down to the ground floor safely. Then he was sent to the hospital with the help of an ambulance.

FIRST AID TRAINING : During the time of an accident, if a person is in dangerous condition, he must be helped before he is taken to the hospital be helped before he is taken to the hospital to protect his life. That is called First Aid. If a person is found in unconscious condition, his tight dresses must be loosen. Then a huge crowd shall not be allowed surrounding him. Good ventilation must be arranged for him with a fan or cloth ventilation can be made by shaking the cloth here and there. Then his pulse rate must be checked by keeping our fingers up on his wrist of the left hand. If the pulse beat is not felt there, we can keep our ear upon the left side of his chest. If it is also found failed we can keep the hind side of our 2 or 3 fingers near his nostrils. And following this we must give pressure to his heart by providing pressure to his heart portion or we can keep our mouth upon the mouth of the disaster affected person and exhale our ear into his mouth gently. It is very important to keep a fine cloth between his and our mouth, so that we can avoid the contagious disease. This is the way of providing Artificial Respiration to the disaster affected person. If the victim’s teeth (lower jaw & upper jaw) are joined to gather we must arrange the patient to recover from that condition. Then the disaster affected person can be taken to the hospital. If a person meets an accident and has a bone fracture the location of fracture shall be found out clearly the fractured bones shall be joint together. Then upon the length wise of these bones on both up and down areas flat sticks or foot scales shall be kept and tied with a cloth torn off from a dhoty or saree or shawl tightly surrounding both the flat sticks. The fractured hand shall not be allowed to hang down. The fracture hand must be bent on the elbow side and in a cradle like form with the help of a long and harrow cloth strip surrounding the neck and surrounding the fractured hands front portion. So the injured victim would not feel much pain after this bandage and cradle like knot arrangement. Then the injured victim can be taken safely to the hospital.   

WATER ANALYSIS FOR DRINKING WATER CONSERVATION : Without water world not be established. No living being can live with out water in this world. Grass, plants, climates, shrubs and trees, animals and reptiles and every being depend upon water. In a human body there is 80% of water content. If the water content is decreased in our body our health condition would be affected and it kidney problem would be occurred. Therefore water is very much essential for us. Rain water only is the pure water. All other varieties of water would be changed according to the quality of the place where it falls. Naturally some minerals which need for our body health are available in water. After the rain water falls upon the earth, then only its quality changes. Now days in this modern world we are in the situation of buying water for money. We must many troubles by drinking such kind of water and being not known the quality of water. In order to rectify this problem we need to do the water Testing. For this purpose a box called ‘’Field water Test kit’’ (FWTK) is available in every village panchayat. In every panchayat union water sample will be taken and tested with Field water Test Kit. After that only water is supplied to the public. This test was explained to the people and to encourage them this test was shown as a practical demonstration. Finally they felt Vote of thanks to the Global Giving aided project staff team.
