Life Skills Training

Through Indian Theatre Arts

The students were provided life skills training through the Indian theatre arts in the virtual mode. The students were taught a story on Hanuman, and given art work based on the theme of Hanuman. The students also learnt the art work for depicting the summer season and learnt about seasons. They also learnt the mythological story of Matsya Avataram, and learnt some slokas from Aditya Hridayam.

Additionally, the students enhanced their communication skills by learning some moral stories. Specifically, they learnt that helping each other gives happiness. They were encouraged to converse with each other through role play. Finally, they learnt a Bhajan, and a dance.

Meditation was introduced, and staying focused with eyes closed for 1 – 2 minutes enhanced their concentration and ability to focus on a given task.

On 29th April World Dance Day was celebrated virtually. On 5th June 2021, World Environment Day was Celebrated by our students depicting art work based on Save the Earth Theme.

On 21st June 2021, International Yoga Day was celebrated by doing a series of Chair Yoga poses.

RASA AADHARAN   a branch of RASA , Chennai was opened in Bengaluru in 2014..  Mrs Rupa Hemanth heads the centre and it was started when the need was felt to have a place  to cater to the population in the city..

RASA AADHARAN now has about  30 children and adults with special needs.

Outlined briefly in the words of its centre head , the daily routine at the  centre

The centre starts with the Prayer . This is  followed by either yoga or movement activity.

Music session - where either instruments /vocal or improvised instruments like plate, tumbler etc., are used according to the needs of the child. Music is used as a tool  to achieve the goals set for the individual with special needs.

Drama session - where emphasis is given on the speech,  situations, characters etc. These are used as tools to facilitate understanding of concepts.

Dance session - Coordination of body parts  along with the expressions to facilitate expression of feelings and co ordination .

Story telling – Here, the child is taught to speak with links like in stories to give a clear picture. He/she also learns the epics, morals and different expressions like navarasas, so this will help  the child to express what he/she feels and also learn , assimilate.

Drawing and Arts & Crafts – During this time,  children will get to cut, paste, draw in thematic manner with proper attempt to understand the size, measurements and colour combinations

Here are two of their success stories:

Pavani* is an adult with mental challenges and with associated physical issues, never co -operated in any activity, now she recites action poems, for example she sings the songs" Bits of paper and picks up all the trash and pours it into the dustbin":…….Her mother also reports that she is much more co operative at home in activities of daily living.

Vikram * an adult with Down s syndrome had several behavioural issues never used to talk to anybody, was very low on confidence, never used to co –operate with teachers in the sessions. Today he loves to be with his friends, helps his juniors. He volunteers in helping feed his friend Ashwin his lunch, takes leadership in bringing all his friends in a line while exercising and reports when in trouble to tackle things.

RASA AADHARAN continues its work five days a week in aid of people with special needs using the tools of Indian Theatre Arts.

 * Names of individuals have been changed to protect identity

'The proof of the pudding is in the eating said someone". We at RASA, showcase our work through the "action" that we do, which is up for display.

RASA is known to spread Indian culture and heritage not once or twice but several times a day in a year by organising SPORTS DAY , AND ITS MEGA ANNUAL DAY.

The Mandavalli and Tiruvanmyur centres celebrated their sports day on March 7th 2019.

At both the centres, the faciliators designed special games which the students can participate in and enjoy as well as learn.

At sports day at Mandavalli centre, three events were conducted.

1. Throwing the ball in the basket.

2. Filling water in another bucket without spilling.

3. Ringing the object.

Among the many happy laughs and truimpthant grins , there evolved many a champions. Some of them have been captured in the pics below.

This year, like every year the past 30 the years, the very special artistes of RASA, put up a mega show with"ARULIN MAZHAI' as the theme. &

Stories of different saints from various parts of India and how the divine voice inside them helped them make an appropirate decision at the right time, which eventually leads to spiritual awareness and in moving  towards a higher path.

The storeis widely researched , are toned down to help people with special needs understand the processes and enjoy being a part of the mega production.

Around 250 people with special needs from various special schools in Chennai came together to make this offering and enjoy the process as well.

Without fail everytime , our children never fail to help us understand and explore the concepts with them and thereby initiate a process of learning, motivation and awarenss.

Signing off for now.

Looking forward to the continued support of you and your other contacts to help us help others better.

  • What a spectacular year it was.
At all the three centres in Mandavalli, Tiruvanmyur and Greenways road, the slow and steady efforts of the staff of RASA showed once agian
Lots of learning, growing and achivemments for the students as well as the staff.
the tiruvanmyur centre tried out various types of activities .
    1. There was a puppet show regarding Christmas. there were peals of joy and laughter at this session.
2.As December was a pleasant weather, the class set out for a walk to buy some Diyas for painting for the "LIGHT FESTIVAL" karthigai festival outside a very ancient temple Marundesshwarar temple.
on way the children had a delightful stop at a local tea shop for  a coffee break.
    3. Let me share a delightful lesson plan. The goal of the students was to say a clear NO to strangers .
when a visitor walked into the building and started to ask many personal questions to the students, most of them were able to be polite but didn't share too many personal details.
    4. Also sharing pictures of a napkin folding class at the centre. look at the concentration and dexterity with which this is being done.
    Looking forward to 2018
