LivelyHoods works with disadvantaged youth and women in Kenyan slums to provide them with training, skills and support to transform them into clean energy ambassadors in their community, earning a safe, sustainable income. We will provide 70 youth and women with a unique opportunity to work their way out of poverty and become changemakers in their community by bringing affordable, life-changing clean energy to low-income households in their slum communities.
The young people that come from the slum communities we work in lack education, access to opportunities to earn a safe, sustainable income, and face discrimination because of where they come from. Their communities also suffer from harmful, and sometimes fatal, indoor air pollution, caused by the traditional stoves they cook on, and the dangerous fuels they use to light their homes.
LivelyHoods offers free training to the most disadvantaged youth and women in slums, then offers them a safe, sustainable way to earn an income as a distributor and ambassador for clean energy in their communities. Our model is a win-win for the entire community, and for the wider society: young people who are struggling to break the cycle of poverty get training and an income, and as they earn, they improve the lives of families in their communities. And all while protecting the environment.
This project will empower 70 talented youth and women, with the skills and resources they need to transform their lives and improve their communities. 90% will go on to further employment, pursue education, or start their own business. Their communities will benefit from 1,800 clean energy products, which will save them USD 1.5 million in reduced fuel expenses, and reduce CO2 emissions by 3,500tons, equivalent to taking 526 cars off the road.
