AVAG (Auroville Village Action Group) PANDEMIC RESPONSE REPORT
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
“There is nothing more beautiful than someone who goes out of their way to make life beautiful for others.” Mandy Hale
We are extremely gratified by the compassion and generosity of individuals and organizations and treasure the contributions of all our donors, friends and well wishers towards our collaborative pandemic response initiatives, without which we would not have been able to support the communities we serve in these crucial times.
PROJECT OVERVIEW
Our initiatives as a response to the second wave of the pandemic started in April 2021 and for the next few months most of our time and energy was utilised to respond to the pandemic related needs of the communities in the bioregion of Auroville, Vanur Block Tamil Nadu. Totally AVAG’s pandemic response initiative has touched the lives of around 1 00 000 people in 78 settlements.
Our efforts have been to reach out to the poorest and most vulnerable people with basic food supplies, masks and hygiene kits. We also focused on awareness generation and advocacy programmes within the communities we serve, primarily through our street-level task forces. Among our various activities, we have been distributing educational flyers, booklets, promoted auto rickshaw canvassing, distributed food relief materials, masks, homeopathic immune boosters and siddha medicine.
The success of our COVID relief initiatives is in large part attributable to the collaborative effort between different stakeholders, consisting of village leaders, women’s federation, PALAAM youths, ABSCA - members of sports associations, Auroville units, schools, the police and other governmental departments.
PROJECT CONCLUSION
Memories of India’s devastating second wave of COVID19 are slowly receding as the pandemic has fallen out of the headlines. Slowly malls and resorts are opening and people start moving around. It seems that many people seem to believe the worst of the pandemic is over and we truly hope so. But we can’t be sure about that as epidemiological models predict a third wave. We stay ready and prepared in case of a third wave to act as fast as possible to mitigate the risks
We are very grateful for all the support we received to help the most vulnerable people of our society.
