Empower 200 Girls in India Through Sports

CREA's "It's My Body!" campaign will inform 200 adolescent girls in India about their sexual and reproductive rights through the medium of sports. Trainings in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh (UP), and Jharkhand will strengthen team-working skills and build the leadership capacities of these girls, enhancing their physical well-being, independence, and self-esteem. This project will ultimately embolden these young girls to affirm their sexual rights so as to combat child marriage and son preference.

A lack of bodily autonomy is greatly evident amongst adolescent girls in India. Nearly half of Indian women marry before the age of 18 according to Oxfam India and even less are educated of their sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). Most initiatives in India, however, tackle this issue by focusing on soft topics such as maternal healthcare or menstruation. Few address the much needed education on sexuality, independence, leadership, and rights of adolescent girls.

This project addresses the gap in information provided to adolescent girls in India on the controversial topic of SRHR by using a less controversial medium - sports. Playing sports will allow the girls to experience team spirit and become more equipped to handle safety and security, both individually and collectively. It will initiate the process of building an understanding among the girls on connections among control over their own bodies, sexuality, health, leadership, diversity, and rights.

Long-Term Impact

The sports events that will take place will bring girls out of their homes, increase the public representation of girls in sports, and bring girls together in peer support. CREA has been using cycle races, football, karate and local traditional sports like kho-kho, kite flying, and kabaddi to mobilise, collectivise, and empower young girls. Girls' needs are being accepted as essential to development and girls' education is increasingly supported in the communities of Jharkhand, Bihar, and UP.
