It's a busy time of year for all of us at CoderDojo HQ with the new Dojo term upon us soon. We're currently working on a new UI for both our CoderDojo.com website and the CoderDojo Community Platform along with lots of cool new content for both Dojos and on a new E-Learning system.
In the meantime we've had lots to celebrate. On July 23rd it was the CoderDojo movement's 5th birthday. We will have big celebration in early September once a lot of Dojos come back from their summer break. Before our 5th birthday we also celebrated reaching the 1000 Dojos milestone. A huge achievement for a volunteer led movement which is now trully global!
Harvey Brezina Conniffe from Wicklow was there with his web development project called “CoderDojo Start-Ups”.
“It’s a system to enable kids in CoderDojo to develop websites, get domain names and make it easier for them to learn web development and how to make websites. Once they sign up they can choose a sub domain of coder dojo. They can then either programme it in the online editor, they can link it to a website they already have or they can graphically build a placeholder page so it can be seen on the internet,” said Harvey.
Other projects on display were “My Voice” by Niall Kehoe from the CoderDojo club in Gorey, Co Wexford.
Niall made a speech enabling app which can be used to help people with speech impediments to communicate easily through pictures and their appropriate headings.
It allows users to take pictures of people, food, activities, etc and save them to their device. To communicate an item, users can tap on the item to enlarge the image and press the microphone button which will then speak the title. Over time, this allows users to build up a huge library of useful photos and words personalised to their own needs.
Without your support we would be unable to make events like Coolest Projects reach such a large scale and we would not be able to sustain and grow the 1000 Dojos in our global Community. Thank you to each and every person who has helped us achieve such success, both young and old!
Please continue to support CoderDojo where you can either by volunteering your time to a local club, starting your own Dojo or donating through Global Giving or our website!
