This year has shown itself to be fertile ground for the launch of an IT apprenticeship program. We have enrolled nineteen (19) apprentices and graduated thirteen (13). We have placed each of them who desired to begin a career in IT with employer partners who are paying them livable wages.
Certifications our graduates have attained include:
- CompTIA ITF+
- CompTIA Network+
- Duda Web Designer
- Adobe Illustrator
We are very proud of what our apprentices have accomplished. Two of our graduates now earn over $38,000 per year before bonuses and benefits! The next phase of our program is to enroll new apprentices and create sustainability for the program. To accomplish this we will utilize contract labor, leverage our funding sources, and create deeper relationships with our employer partners.
In most cases, employee turnover is detrimental to an organization. However, with our recent loss of our LIFE Tech Program Director, we filled the position with an outstanding gentleman who has transformed LIFE Tech into everything we imagined it to be. In addition to our previous services (hardware repair, IT Training, etc.), we now create websites, podcast, create professional videos, have drone footage, and so much more. We have engaged museums, nonprofit organizations, and for-profit organizations for content creation, SEO, etc. Our first apprentices have all completed at least three industry-recognized certifications and we have nearly eight more apprentices in the pipeline.
For example, one of our clients (Kayla) had no money, no plan, and no hope. She became a financial opportunity center client and was diligent about following the advice of her financial coach. She enrolled in our IT Apprenticeship Program (LIFE Tech). Less than two months and three certifications later, she was recently offered a job paying $15.00 per hour. What a success!
LIFE Tech will never be the same and our community will benefit from that.
The last two years have been challenging for all of us. As we ended 2020, we all thought that the worst was over with the COVID-19 pandemic, but we were very wrong with that assumption. The Delta variant of 2021 has reminded us of how sensitive the topic is and how maintaining caution in how we operate is essential.
We are proud to announce the next phase of our Technology Access Program. We were able to give away computer hardware valued in excess of $30,000. We have provided access to digital literacy training to over 50 members of our community and low-cost internet to nearly 15 more. We know that our project is accomplishing its goals. The next phase is how to bring sustainability to our efforts. We have been in communication with several organizations within our community and there is a growing number of people who only need to borrow a computer for a short period of time. With this new reality, we are launching a hardware leasing program. We will have 15-20 machines available for leases as short as one month.
With this additional program, we are excited to add value to our community without being financially imposing. We're excited to share this information with you and look forward to informing you on how it's coming along.
