 Tenth Report for GlobalGiving

Project Title: Climate Change Resilient Families in Honduras

During this period, farming families have suffered severe climate impacts, especially from excessive rainfall and sudden changes in temperature. For example, with tropical storm Sara in 12 communities in the department of Choluteca in the southern part of the country, 508 families were affected, losses of 162 hectares of corn crops, 109 hectares of beans, 6 hectares of maicillo and 43 houses were damaged. Due to the fact that the damages are greater in the northern region of the country, aid has been directed more to that region and little support has been provided to the southern zone.

At Red COMAL we are aware of the harmful effects of climate change and continue to support families in order to strengthen their installed capacities for livelihoods and thus achieve greater community resilience.

 Main achievements:

During this period, we have continued to provide technical accompaniment to agroecological producers, especially in vegetable production and avocado cultivation.

A greenhouse was built for vegetable production in the community of La Azomada, municipality of Gracias in the department of Lempira. This greenhouse will support 40 vegetable producers.

At least 50 families from the communities of Los Puentes, El Cedro and El Porvenir, in the municipality of Opatoro, department of La Paz, received support with 780 plants for the establishment of Hass avocado crops.

In addition, the farmers have been provided with some inputs for the production of agroecological fertilizers and vegetable seeds.

In this way we are contributing to the food security and sovereignty of the families and to the improvement of their income from the sale of their production in local markets.

We would like to express our deep gratitude to the community of donors in GlobalGiving, thanks to their valuable support they make possible our work in favor of the farmers and indigenous economy.

We take this opportunity to wish them a Merry Christmas and much strength to continue building a more just and supportive society in the New Year.
