In July 2026, the COMAL network shared the news that we trained rural producers in western Honduras in building water filters as an irrigation alternatives. These filters are often called “grey water” filters because they capture wastewater from washing clothing and dishes, as well as from other household tasks, and repurpose that water for irrigation. In these uncertain times of climate crises and resource scarcity, water management is crucial.
In this quarter, COMAL continued promoting this sustainable practice in communities in Lempira, Intibucá and La Paz, Honduras. COMAL’s technical team collaborated with indigenous and rural families to build 200 grey water filters that will irrigate patio gardens, family farms and orchards. Importantly, the filters promote a more efficient use of water, while reducing the contamination of surface water sources such as rivers and streams.
In Marcala, La Paz, 70 filters were built in the communities of Las Vegas, El Pelón, La Estanzuela, Corral de Piedras and Arenales. In Intibucá, 40 filters were built in the communities of Cruz de Santiago, Río Grande and Río Colorado. Meanwhile, in Gracias Lempira, 90 filters were built in the communities of Plata Nares, Camalote, Camalote Campuca, Llanito Verde, Altos de Guanteque, El Zapote, Rancho Grande and La Somada. Women played a major role in the installation of these filters.
As these families advance in their production of food and in the protection of the diverse environment of their native western Honduras, COMAL will continue to provide you with updates. Grey to green, waste to well-being... the COMAL Network is committed to soil and water management.
