Proposed project site, The Sundarbans coastal region is climatically vulnerable due to its' geographic location. People of this region haven't sufficient knowledge on how to reduce disaster risk, minimize loss and damage and adapt with changed climate. This project aims at improving capacity of the target communities on disaster risk assessment, signaling, pre, during and post disaster activities, adaptation techniques etc. using BEDS working experience and existing facilities.
Bangladesh government and NGOs have been working to reduce disaster risks of the Sundarbans coastal communities. But according to our working experience, Union Disaster Management Committee (UDMC) members and NGO workers don't have profound knowledge on disaster risk assessment, activities of pre, during and post disaster, signaling and climate change adaptation. Lack of coastal peoples' knowledge on natural disaster causes much loss and damage which accelerates relief and rehabilitation cost.
Through this project, 650 people from NGOs and members of 13 UDMC will be provided training on disasters preparedness, utilizing governments' cyclone shelters and adaptation techniques. Then the trained members will motivate their respective villagers for disaster preparedness activities. Once the local community becomes conscious about disaster preparedness, their disaster risks will be definitely reduced to a great extent and their loss and damage for natural disaster will be reduced.
Through this project disaster ready communities will be established in the Sundarbans coastal region of Bangladesh. Once the communities become disaster ready, their socio economic status will be improved. Then they will be able to utilize their existing resources to lead a happy life. Government can also use the money for the wider benefit of people which is generally spent for relief and rehabilitation. This project will contribute to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (Goal no. 13).
