Summary

In Chaangu, a farming community in Ghana's Upper West Region, women and children walk 3.5 km every day to get water. Some drink from a muddy pond that animals also use and where crocodiles live. The community has already drilled a borehole that flows year-round, but it's 3.5 km from the village, and they can't afford the pipes to bring the water home. Bridgeway Foundation's plumbing test showed that the water can be piped to the village.

Challenge

Chaangu has no reliable source of safe drinking water. About ten boreholes in the community stopped working after the water table dropped each dry season. Residents now walk up to 3.5 km to Sankana for water, or drink from an open pond. People and animals share the contaminated pond. Women and children carry most of this burden.

Solution

Bridgeway Foundation will buy and install the pipes and materials needed to connect Chaangu's year-round borehole to the village, 3.5 km away. The community has already drilled the borehole at a site that keeps water through the dry season, and our plumbing test confirmed the water can be piped to the village. With the pipeline in place, families will collect safe water inside their own community. They will no longer walk up to 3.5 km to Sankana or drink from a contaminated pond.

Long-Term Impact

The project will provide the 5000 residents of Chaangu with permanent, year-round access to safe drinking water within their community. It solves a problem that has persisted for years: the old boreholes dried up every dry season, so families walked up to 3.5 km for water or drank from a contaminated pond. Once the borehole is connected, fewer people, especially children, will get sick from waterborne diseases.
