No One Down Relief Organization (NODRO) will implement a 5-year nationwide initiative to provide clean and safe drinking water to 10,000 rural residents in Oromia, Amhara, Somali, Afar, and SNNPR regions of Ethiopia. The project will focus on: Constructing 100 solar-powered wells and hand pumps. Establishing Water User Committees (WUCs) to manage and maintain the systems. Conducting hygiene promotion and water conservation training
Pressing Issue and the Problem: Ethiopia faces one of the severest rural water crises in Africa, affecting health, livelihoods, and education. Over 60% of rural Ethiopians lack access to safe water (UNICEF, 2024). Women and girls walk up to 6 km daily to fetch water, risking safety and missing school. Waterborne diseases such as cholera, diarrhea, and typhoid are leading causes of child mortality. Droughts worsen water scarcity and community displacement.
Over 5 years, NODRO will implement a sustainable, community-driven water project model that integrates clean water infrastructure, training, and local governance. We will: Drill and construct 100 solar-powered wells across five regions. Install hand pumps and water storage tanks for reliable access. Train local youth technicians for maintenance and repair. Establish and train Water User Committees (WUCs) for management. Conduct hygiene and sanitation awareness campaigns in villages.
10,000 rural residents gain reliable access to clean water. 70% reduction in waterborne diseases among children. Women and girls regain up to 3-4 hours daily for education and livelihoods. Empowered communities managing their own water systems. Sustainable, climate-resilient water access model replicated in other regions.
