Summary

This project will provide clean water to 1,176 people of Garadida, plus a school and health post. No longer will people need to walk dangerous lengths to collect water that often leads to ill health. Women and men will be trained to maintain and manage the new water system. They will also receive health and livelihood education, especially in agricultural skills that will lead to improved health and an increased income. A HOPE staff member will live in Garadida for 2 years to embed learning.

Challenge

Nearly 1 in 10 people worldwide live without clean water. Most live in rural areas and spend extraordinary amounts of time collecting water, which is often contaminated, from wherever they can. With over 35 years of experience of working in Ethiopia, HOPE has found that access to clean water acts as a powerful catalyst to transformation, allowing needy communities to break free from poverty - by improved health and added time for pursuing an education and earning needed money.

Solution

To supply clean water just minutes from each household in Garadida, HOPE will work with the local community to cap the nearest natural spring & create a closed gravity-fed system, channelling the water via an underground pipeline to central water points. Comprehensive health, hygiene & sanitation education is also a core part of each of our projects. Additional follow-up investment is provided through teaching 100 women basic business skills and savings and lending principles in small groups.

Long-Term Impact

In addition, this project also will provide training on adapted farming skills for 150 households. It will also provide 20 landless household with 5 beehives each as a means of earning needed money. Similarly, there will be an investment in environmental protection to ensure that surrounding farms are protected from the increased erosion due to unpredictable, heavy rains. Self-reliance will be made possible because accessible clean water provides time for them to help themselves out of poverty
