Family Services: Holidays

Thank you for your generous support of the Children’s Fund at Boston Children’s Hospital.

The Children’s Fund supports the many priorities and innovative programs in patient care,teaching/medical training, research and community health for children from low income families and communities. Your philanthropy will greatly impact on patients and their families in need during the holiday season. Many families struggle financially and are unable to provide holiday gifts, winter clothing and holiday meals for their children. Here at Boston Children’s we are able to provide support and resources through different programs.

The Hale Family Center for Families has a clothing closet for patients and families who travel to the hospital emergently and find themselves in need of a change of clothing. Toy drop offs are popular throughout the holiday season where donations come in from companies, families and individuals. Donations range from books, toys, gift cards and more to provide gifts to patients whose family cannot afford them and those who will be staying in the hospital throughout the holiday season.

Hosted by the Family Services team, the annual Boston Children's Holiday Craft Fair event kicks-off the season for the entire hospital community. Patients, family members, staff and visitors can browse the assortment of unique handmade gifts including candles, quilts, stained glass, jewelry, holiday decorations, greeting cards and much more from New England vendors.

The New Year will mark the one year anniversary of the Family Services team moving to the hospital’s main lobby, the Hale Family Center for Families. The program supported by philanthropy continues to grow. Rooms for family meetings, an activity space and a relaxation area have provided families the space to relax and care for themselves during their time at the hospital. Throughout the year the Family Services team has worked hard to ensure that families feel comfortable, confident, inspired, valued and supported throughout their entire Boston Children's experience.

We are deeply grateful for your compassion and vision in supporting the Children’s Fund and for helping children and their families especially through the holiday season.

Thank you for your generous support of the Children’s Fund at Boston Children’s Hospital.

The Children’s Fund supports the many priorities and innovative programs in patient care, teaching/medical training, research and community health for children from low income families and communities. One area that your philanthropy has funded is the Creative Arts Program which provides engaging, innovative and uplifting experiences that support an integrated approach to care for the many diverse families and communities we serve. Some of the programs within Creative Arts includes: Artists-in-Residents, the Art Cart and Music Therapy.

Music Therapy is the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program. Music Therapy is currently being provided weekly in both the Inpatient Units and Outpatient Units.

Research shows that Music Therapy can be used to address positive changes in a patient. Physiological outcomes include decreased heart rate, blood pressure and pain perception and the increase of circulation. Neurologically changes have the ability to improve cognitive, communication, and motor skills. Psychosocial changes results in stress reduction, positive changes in mood and decrease length of stay.

Take a look inside the joyful, healing collaboration between patients and our Music Therapists—carrying on Boston Children’s Hospital’s commitment to innovative, patient and family centered care.

It’s an extraordinary transformation: a child comes to us barely surviving, then goes home thriving. A testament to the unparalleled care received—and to generous people like you. When you support the Children’s Fund, you’re supporting the many priorities and innovative programs in patient care, teaching and medical training, research and community health for children from low income families and communities.

Children can be hospitalized at Boston Children’s Hospital for a day, a week or several months in order to receive the medical care they need. They are away from school, family and friends, perhaps many miles from home, dealing not just with illness, but also with loneliness and anxiety. Your exceptional generosity brings emotional support, learning opportunities and fun to these children when they need it most.

Our child life specialists, trained to work in a medical setting, transform play into therapeutic interventions through activities that inspire emotional expression. They help children and their families cope with the turmoil of a child’s illness and reduce the stress that can complicate healing. Over the past year we’ve experienced much growth and have made important improvements to Child Life Services—improvements that would have been impossible without your dedicated support. Thank you for your compassion and kindness.

One of the most dramatic changes has been the addition of weekend child life specialists. Weekends are a quiet time at Children’s. The rush of doctors’ rounds comes to a stop and patients have time to visit with family and friends. But the slower pace can also be an unwelcome reminder of all the enjoyment that children miss out on by being hospitalized. Previously, only the oncology unit had the benefit of a weekend specialist. Thanks to the generosity of donors like you, the hospital has added five new staff members to oversee volunteers, host events and keep the playrooms open seven days a week. Our new specialists have transformed the weekend atmosphere for patients and their families.

Boston Children’s Hospital is committed to caring for the whole child, not just his or her disease or injury. We are deeply grateful for your compassion and vision in supporting the Children’s Fund and for helping children and their families transcend the difficulties of hospitalization.

Boston Children’s Hospital never stops looking for ways to make patient care safer, smarter and more personal. Along with putting 3D printing to work in the operating room, we’ve developed a device that reduces the risk of infections, and used the internet to improve care of chronic illness. These innovations come from constantly reexamining how we care for patients, interact with families, and understand disease.

None of our work- the revolutionary or the routine- would be possible without your partnership. Philanthropy is at the heart of everything we do, from hastening a new era of precision medicine to easing the stress on worried families.

The Children’s fund supports the many priorities and innovative programs in patient care, teaching and medical training, research and community health for children from low income families and communities. The Hale Family Center for Families provides resources and services that families need unexpectedly during their visit at the hospital. More space, more services and expanded weekend hours have been welcomed by families facing long hours, days and nights in the hospital. Additional wellness programs such as yoga and guided meditation help reduce stress for parents and caregivers.

Boston Children’s Hospital believes in thinking big to tackle medical challenges but our philanthropic partners are the real visionaries. Because of your support, our scientists and clinicians can discover new treatments, find new cures and give every family the care and attention they deserve. We are deeply grateful for your commitment to our mission. Thank you.
