Girls from a Kabul school discuss the exhibition
Girls from a Kabul school discuss the exhibition

This report is based on a recently-received partner report detailing the exhibition of photos from the PhotoVoice photography project with young people in Afghanistan.

The first exhibition took place in the Bibi Ayesha Girls High School in Kabul between 16 – 21 October 2010. There are almost 6500 students in the school and our partner believes that almost all of them watched the exhibition and read the captions of the photographs on the boards.

On the 21st October, the exhibition moved to the Ibrahim Khalilullah high school for boys, continuing for another week and continued for another week. Again, we are hopeful that all 6000 students of the school saw the exhibition. The exhibition was appreciated by the students and teachers in Ibrahim Khalilullah School were pleased to have hosted it.

On the 28th, the exhibition went to a mixed school with both girls and boys attending separate shifts. The boys attend to Alam Faiz school in the morning and girls attend the Manocheri school in the same building in the afternoon). The total number of students in these two schools is 12000 and the exhibition continued there for a week until November 4th.

The final exhibition was in the Lycee Esteqlal from 6 – 11 November. Lycee Estiqlal is a famous boys High School with 7000 students in the heart of Kabul. Here French is the medium of instruction. Again the exhibition made a favorable impression on students and teachers alike. So much so that the school requested the exhibition be left for an extended period in the school’s exhibition’s gallery.

The school took charge of the exhibition at the end of November.

Finally, the project also produced leaflets and posters related to this project. These have been widely distributed to other schools a number of government and public venues throughout Kabul.

Despite the difficulties in getting the project off the ground, I think that all involved with the project would say that it’s been a big success – and something that PhotoVoice hopes to do much more of.

A very big thank you for your support!
