By Ruth Konchellah | Director of Cherish Others Organization Kenya
Since our last update, Cherish Others Organization Kenya has continued to train young girls and boys in the Kilgoris area about the dangers of female circumcision. Director Ruth Konchellah has also gone to a number of schools in order to raise awareness and to encourage girls to remain in school.
Cherish Others has donated school supplies, since schools in the Kilgoris area are always short of very basic supplies, such as pencils and writing material.
In addition to working with the local girls (and boys), the Director of Cherish Others, Ruth Konchellah has been meeting with local officials to sensitize them to the problems girls face with respect to FGM and early marriage. The response has been very positive, with officials expressing their commitment to better enforce laws against FGM, and to encourage girls to avoid early marriage and to remain in school.
An important dimension of the efforts of Cherish Others is reaching out to the parents of girls and to traditional community leaders. Cherish Others has continued to do this in order to mobilize a community-wide approach to fighting FGM and to helping girls.
