GlobeMed/PHASE Nepal: January 2016 Update
By Monica He | Director of Finances, GlobeMed at Tufts
GlobeMed at Tufts is one of 56 chapters nationwide committed to health care and public health equity abroad. Our chapter is specifically partnered with PHASE Nepal, an NGO working to improve education, health, and livelihood opportunities for local communities in Nepal through a sustainable, self-empowerment grassroots framework. This year our focus is primarily on fundraising for the Child's Health Education Program, which seeks to promote healthy behaviors and hygiene practices by educating the youth population. Our project is currently being implemented in rural areas of Nepal that are normally very remote and have little access to quality health care and education opportunities. The fundraised money is used to support the training of teaching facilitators who are at the forefront of a reform movement to better the education and teaching systems in rural Nepal.
As the Spring 2016 semester rolls around, we currently stand at $12,762, which is 85% of our total fundraising goal of $15,000 for this academic year. We are $2,238 away from this total and we are projected to not only meet this goal but to also hopefully surpass it. We have collectively worked incredibly hard this past semester and we truly appreciate your contributions, the generosity of our donors, and the effort and time each of our chapter members have dedicated to GlobeMed at Tufts. We hope to continue our fundraising efforts through our partnership with you, and we thank you again for your support.

Globemed PHASE
By Nikita Shukla | Director of Finances
Globemed at Tufts University has partnered up with PHASE Nepal to create a Child’s health Education program. PHASE believes that poor health, low educational levels and poverty are all aspects of the same problem, and create a cycle preventing people from taking control of their own futures. This Child’s Health Education Program would help children in the regions of Nepal near PHASE develop healthy behaviors. The program has focused on health sanitation, hygiene, and promoting healthy behaviors among the youth.
In the last few months GlobeMed at Tufts University has amped up their fundraising efforts on campus and online. We were amazed and inspired by the support received in response to these efforts. Your support has helped PHASE Nepal create a Child’s Health Education Program. As a result GlobeMed was able to cover the cost of salary, living expenses, and training of facilitators as well as allocate funds for clubs and extracurricular activities. While our fundraising goal for this school year has been met, we strive to exceed our target. Thanks to your generosity our organization can truly affect change by encouraging the priceless development of healthy behavior among Nepali youth. Your support also helped us send aid to the Nepalese quickly after the devastating earthquake which helped infrastructure and services at our partner organization's base.
Moving forward GlobeMed at Tufts is focusing on what we can do for our local community. We are organizing a panel to speak about voluntourism on campus in order to start a campus-wide discussion on the morality of different tourism practices. We are also planning other on campus fundraisers, such as another Trivia Night, and in-restaurant fundraising near Tufts University’s campus.Furthermore, we are ramping up with new campaigns specific to the holiday season.

Summer Update on PHASE Nepal & GlobeMed at Tufts
By Emily Miller | Co-President
Over the past few months, GlobeMed at Tufts wrapped up a successful year of fundraising and has begun to plan for the coming year. As news of the earthquakes in Nepal fades from the headlines, GlobeMed at Tufts maintains a strong commitment to supporting PHASE relief and rebuilding efforts. PHASE has focused extraordinary amounts of time, energy, and effort on recovery efforts. While these important recovery efforts continue, PHASE has stressed that support of education remains critical to their mission of breaking the cycle of poverty. As we plan our next semester, we hope to increase and strengthen our support of PHASE's education initiatives in this critical time.
