GlobeMed at Tufts is a student-run organization comprised of over 45 members dedicated to promoting and supporting global health and education equity. We are a part of a larger national organization that pairs each of its 50+ participating collegiate chapters with a grassroots international health-based organization. Through these cooperative and sustainable relationships students and communities are able to work together to pursue the mutual goal of improving health globally.
Every year, GlobeMed at Tufts picks one project to focus our fundraising goals on. This year, we have chosen to fund an Education Development Program in Nepal, through our partner, PHASE Nepal. GlobeMed at Tufts' fundraising efforts will financially support PHASE efforts to establish educational normalcy in multiple project areas after the earthquakes of Spring, 2015. The communities in which PHASE works were some of the most devastated, with many schools and health posts completely destroyed.
The money raised by GlobeMed at Tufts specifically will be used by PHASE to reconstruct schools, pay teachers and teacher trainers in the field, and provide teaching materials for schools in about 14 communities in rural Nepal. The program also promotes local forums in schools for conversation and action related to topics such as child rights, child protection, youth empowerment and leadership, health education, and extracurricular activities.
Systemically improving the educational system in Nepal, along with providing free access to quality healthcare, will promote a healthier generation that is more able to be self-sufficient and break the long-standing cycle of poverty in rural Nepali communities.
