Update-- Village Scholarship Program

By Olga Murray | NYOF Founder

At present, there are 274 children who live in seven different districts in this program. The scholarship recipients are the children of impoverished and marginalized families. Forty of them are the children of parents with HIV/AIDS. None of them would have been able to attend school without NYOF’s help.

Twenty-one graduates took the college entrance examination and sixteen passed – far higher pass rate than the national average. All of them have gone on to college at expense.

This program has done a tremendous amount of good since its inception in 1997 by educating children who would not have had the opportunity to go to school. Here is what one student, Min Bahadur Pariyar, who has been under scholarship for several years, wrote:

“I would like to express my gratitude towards NYOF (NYOF’s counterpart that implements the program). My father admitted me in grade 1 in Newarpani Primary School. I completed my primary level from there. I performed very well in my primary classes. In final examination of grade one, I got sixth position in class. Later in final examinations of grade 2, 3 and 4, I stood class first. Then my teachers recommended me for this scholarship because of my performance and my poverty. Now I have been studying in Bhairavi School in grade 9.

“Everybody in my village knows that my family is very poor. Actually it was like a dream for me to continue my study till this grade. Its because of the scholarship, I have been able to study now in grade 9.The support you are giving me could be very less in your judgment, but it is a very significant contribution for my life. My life is taking a bright turn because of your support. I know that in Nepal lots of children are out of school even in their school going age. Because of poverty children are even forced to work for livelihood. So, my request is that NYOF should support such children who are poor, dalits and marginalized. Actually supporting children for education is a holy thing. NYOF is more than a god to hundreds of such children to whom it is supporting. The children whom NYOF is supporting will do some good for their country and its people. And I also feel obliged to share that responsibility.

“These days with NYOF's scholarship my family is not facing any problem for my study. I don’t have problems to buy stationeries and books. I am happy that I am wearing good dress provided by NYOF. So, thank you very much.”
