Dalit families in Nepal face deep-rooted caste discrimination that limits education, safety, and opportunity. NYF's Caste Equality Project-launched in Saptari-helps children stay in school, equips women to lead, and supports families with legal aid, job training, and community resources. Your support helps break cycles of generational poverty and builds a more just, equitable future. Together, we're creating lasting change from the ground up.
Nepal's caste system created a rigid social hierarchy, placing Dalits-over 13% of the population-at the bottom. Though caste-based discrimination was outlawed in 1963 and reaffirmed in 2006, Dalit communities still face systemic inequality, especially in rural areas, such as Saptari District. Many live below the poverty line, with limited access to education, jobs, and justice. Cultural bias and unprosecuted hate crimes continue to fuel cycles of poverty, exclusion, and generational oppression.
NYF is tackling caste-based inequality through long-term, multi-faceted solutions. We've enrolled over 820 Dalit children in school with scholarships, while also providing hot school lunches. Community Learning Centers offer tutoring, childcare, adult literacy and skills training. Peer Counselors are bringing mental health awareness to their communities. Street drama activists raise awareness on child marriage, and gender-based violence. Women-led programs drive leadership & generational change.
NYF is making a generation-long commitment to Dalit communities, ensuring: Education access expands for all ages. Economic mobility increases through vocational training. Women gain leadership roles and self-sufficiency. Caste-based stigma and gender-based violence are dismantled. Saptari District communities gain resources to sustain progress. By funding this project, you are helping to build a future where Dalit families can access justice, dignity, and opportunity.
