Childline Kenya has overtime mapped out various partners across the country to build a national response system to children’s needs and concerns. Children in Kenya contact the Helpline service toll free by dialling 116, sending an SMS to 116, chatting with counsellors through our website or walking in our drop in centres for face to face interactions with the Helpline counsellors or social workers.
Everyday, an average of 600 calls are received at the Child Helpline that range from reporting child abuse, requests for counseling and information on child related issues. Every case reported to the Child Helpline 116 that requires immediate action is referred to a suitable service provider who then offers the necessary resources to address it.
Our key partner in protecting children is the Government through the Department of Children Services, the Judicial System (Children's Courts, lawyers and prosecutors) and the Local Administration (Police, Chiefs etc); and numerous NGO's Countrywide.
However, this response system has had notable challenges which include;
To mitigate these challenges, Childline Kenya has developed and is rolling out a national systems strengthening program which aims at creating a strong referral pathway and case management for the Helpline to operate efficiently in responding to reported child protection concerns.
This program provides guidelines for care givers in the various stages of service provision to survivors of child abuse i.e. The onset of crisis for a child - Planning for response and care - Referral and liaison with support services - Monitoring and evaluation - Positive outcomes for the child - and case closure. Childline is rolling out this program to all the 47 Counties in Kenya.
