Assistance to the Children living in Difficult Circumstances (CDCs);

Follow-up Field Work No. 2

After goodbye to the children of Mother Daeng, the FCYD Team is heading to other villages of Na Dong and Som Sang to visit younger Nong Ploy and Nong Ohm (Nong is a prefix to call younger girls or boys that makes communication more closed & friendly)… Four (4) years ago, Nong Ploy was only 4 months old and living with her grandparents and no any information of the mother and she never visited her since then. For Nong Ohm, that time he was 4 years old. His mother was ‘single mom’ the father was away and never come back.

Both of Nong Ploy and Nong Ohm were the same sickness of retinoblastoma. What is it? The doctor explained that, the only known cause of retinoblastoma is a genetic mutation or change.

Some people say that it is a sickness of sin. However, it is not cured and treated in prompt time, it may cause of blindness. For Nong Ploy, it was good luck that, it was happened to one eye but not for Nong Ohm. The sickness was happened to both eyes. At that time when we was given information about these 2 kids, we visited them at home and gave them ‘emergency assistance’ to have the kids visited the doctor at Srinakarind Hospital; the biggest regional hospital of Northeast of Thailand located in and under management of Khon Kaen University.

Time passes by, as a representative of FCYD Foundation and working closely with health volunteer network at local – Mrs.Nootrai has been in contact with us in order to help the 2 children from time to time. Today (July 2015), we visit them at homes. Nong Ploy now is 4 years old and study in KG2. The left eye with retinoblastoma is almost completely normal, it seems nothing happened caused by the cancer disease. However, the grandmother told us that it needs to have Nong Ploy check at the hospital according to the doctor’s recommendation. For Nong Ohm, it is not good luck, he lost his right eye. His left eye is in need to be checked and treated per as to the doctor to ensure that, the disease is treated promptly and not spread beyond the eye to other part of the body.

Mr. Martin Schicht; advisor of FCYD Foundation for fundraising in German gave some cash to mitigate and help the 2 families be able to take care Nong Ploy and Nong Ohm not only for everyday living but also admission to the hospital in Khon Kaen province. Living Assistance for families in Difficult Times

Assistance to the Children living in Difficult Circumstances: Phoetak District, Nong Khai Province

Under the collaboration with local public health network Phoetak District, Nong Khai Province, we have paid home visits and given emergency assistance (food allowance) in order to mitigate household difficulties as well as cost of parenting care to the children. We also visited the children and had a meeting with teachers where the children are studying there.

Home visit no.1

A house of Wiphasiri and younger brother Bundit, elder sister Sopha studies in Pratom 5 (grade 5) and younger brother studies in KG2. They live in a house with their grandparents. Grandfather is not good health of cataract which makes his visuality not so good. Grandmother is also not in good physical condition caused of myasthenia gravis. She is not able to walk in longer meters, but just sit or sleep in a house. Mother of the children separated his husband and moved away to work and stay in a far province. Almost every month, she has deposited/transferred some money to help her parents who takes care her kids at home. Both of the children are quite good and enthusiastic to do housework. But for younger Bundit, it seems that he is in malnutrition, it can be seen from his small-body size and in comparison to general criteria; weight and height for the boy of 6 years old.

Home visit no.2

A house of Nithiporn, she is studying in Pratom (grade 4) and living with her grandparents. Her mother after divorce, she has a new family and live in a far province. She seldom deposited or transferred money to her parents, but only small amount of 3-500-baht per time. Grandmother needs to adopt another niece; a daughter of grandmother’s elder sister who is sick and disabled to take care herself. The grandparents has no permanent job but daily wages from general labour.

Home visit no.3

A house of Watcharapong, he is studying in Pratom 2 (grade 2) and living with his grandmother, just 2 people in the house. His parents separated long time ago. No any news from the father but his mother is seldom to communicate him. His grandmother is quite old and not be able to work hard for wages. She earns by collecting and selling some local vegetables, young bamboo and fishes from paddy field. Watcharapong, as a result from same menu of bamboo does not like to have breakfast before going to school. Moreover, going to school, Watcharapong and the grandmother need to walk from home to school, distance about 4 kilometers. The FCYD Foundation basically supported the fee for transportation by asking for help from neighbor to have Watcharapong sit on the motorbike – he rides motorbike for his nephew to the same school. During home visit, public health volunteer (Mrs. Phan) educated the grandmother to know and understand about importance of breakfast for children, especially for studying and learning new things at school.

Our FCYD team after that visited to Phoe Tak School, where all children are studying there. Discussion and information with school director and teachers is shared about how to promote nutrition for the students who are living in difficult circumstances. Some students in school are found that, they are in malnutrition and bad hygienic conditions which as basic causes lead them to inappropriate developmental growth. We FCYD Foundation are in strong intention to initiate this development with school and collaboration with local authority in the near future.

Donation received from you we truly make it for the children per as to your wishes. Some of the partial contributions, we would like to have and collect it for implementation of higher-level action of the sustainable development, for example of knowledge and capacity building for early childhood care and development (ECCD). Nutrition Development for Difficult Circumstances

“There are several numbers of students, we know that they do not have breakfast from home. What we can do it best is to give them a box of milk in order to mitigate their hunger, until it is a lunch time at noon.”

“The case of little boy ‘Nong Bundit’, he is 6 years old but his weight is only 12 kilograms and very small size body.”

We have this information from school director of Phoe Tak School, which is an initiation of the project of ‘Nutrition Development and Breakfast Program for Students living in Difficult Circumstances’ Target of the project is for students of Phoe Tak and Sao Lae Schools, located in Phoe Tak district, Nong Khai provicen. Project goal is to upgrade health development for students of malnutrition by providing knowledge and skill of good nutrition and foods for teachers and parents. The project is also to provide schools small grants for breakfast management. The Breakfast will be supported for students of malnutrition and in poor families. Period of project implementation is from now on till to the end of semester in March 2016. The FCYD Foundation has some starting budget but not covered all items. We would like to ask for donation from good-heart people for following items;

Rice, canned and preserved food and ingredients e.g. fish sources, vegetable oil, sugar, etc.
Cash donation for breakfast small grant, this will be for expenditures of fresh food and vegetable each day
