This project will build a sustainable healthcare service that will offer free Pap-Smear Testing to thousands of women in Kosovo who cannot otherwise afford the expensive testing and diagnosis.
Squamous cell carcinoma of the uterine cervix is the second most frequent cancer type and the third leading cause of cancer related mortality in women worldwide. According to World Health Organization 527,000 new cases and 265,000 cervical cancer related deaths were recorded in 2012. Eighty five percent of these occurred in developing countries. Absence or low effectiveness of prevention programs are the main causes of cervical cancer related morbidity and mortality in these countries.
Action for Mothers and Children will provide free cervical cancer screening to thousands of women between 21-65 years of age within Family Medicine Centers in Kosovo. This will help develop the action plan for making human and financial planning to build the screening program at the national level.
The long-term goal of the program is to broaden the screening capability at national level, including distant municipalities, where women have limited access to health services.
