You are receiving this report from us at Cambrian Wildwood via Global Giving, following your kind donation to our crowdfunder in the run-up to Christmas. The crowdfunder raised £4,181.73 which will be added to other funds to pay for project management and fundraising costs. We are very pleased with this result, considering the many other worthy causes all desperate for our money, and it has provided a massive boost to us to have this level of support for the project at this early stage.
Following this success, we have just taken on a project manager on a short contract, whose main role will be to finalise some other funding streams, apply for grants and appoint a fundraiser to fulfil our main objective of raising the money to buy land. The aim is to be in a position to employ a full-time project manager for a decent term. The short contract is being paid out of other funds so that all of the crowdfunder money will go towards the fundraiser and full-time post.
Meanwhile, we have been offered the use of a property in Aberystwyth town centre, free of charge, which we will be moving into this week. It will provide us with office and meeting space and has a shop front. We have a few ideas for how to use the space: our display will be visible from the high street, we will provide gallery space for local artists to exhibit nature themed art, and we will put on events such as story telling. It will be an excellent focus point for Cambrian Wildwood, giving us a physical presence in town and a place to meet. If you are local, come and see us at 44 Terrace Road.
Other news is that our charity Wales Wild Land Foundation is in discussion with Welsh Government about a piece of wild land on the outskirts of Aberystwyth. It is about 3 acres of floodplain woodland by the River Rheidol, set within a larger area of similar wild land. All being well, we will be given the land through a Community Asset Transfer, and look after it on behalf of the local community. Our aim is to keep it as a wild area and improve its wildlife by tackling some invasive non-native plants. This project will be run by a volunteer group from the local community. This is not part of Cambrian Wildwood, which remains our main focus.
The momentum behind rewilding in UK is growing, with wide support from conservation professionals, academics and, most importantly, the general public. If you want to keep up to date with what’s going on UK wide, have a look at www.rewildingbritain.org.uk
the website for the new charity Rewilding Britain, where you can view some interesting articles and sign up for the newsletter. As you will see, Cambrian Wildwood is one of the projects cited by Rewilding Britain. This should be translated into more concrete support in due course, and which will help us towards carrying out rewilding on the ground here in Wales.
As a supporter, you will be added to our Cambrian Wildwood newsletter email list, unless you donated anonomously. You can unsubscribe to this any time by sending us a message, via ‘Contact Us’ on our website, or by replying to the newsletter email. There is an option to subscribe on the website. A newsletter is produced about 4 times a year, with summaries of news and articles with links to the website for the full piece.
If you would like to give further support to Cambrian Wildwood, we have an ongoing campaign to raise the money for land, through donations or pledges: please see our website www.cambrianwildwood.org or www.coetiranian.org.
We can also still accept donations through Global Giving for project management and fundraising costs. On this point, you might like to know that on 16th March, from 1.00pm until 4.00am the following morning, Global Giving will be match funding every donation made by 50%. So a £10 donation becomes £15, or £17.50 if you add Gift Aid. This is a nice way to add impact to your donation.
Thanks to your support for Cambrian Wildwood, we will continue in our mission to restore wildlife over a large area for everybody’s benefit and for the wildlife itself.
Best wishes,
Simon Ayres
