Coetir Anian / Cambrian Wildwood is a Welsh nature restoration charity. We are the custodians of 140 hectares of formerly degraded land in Mid Wales. Our aim is to restore the land's natural habitats to increase biodiversity, carbon capture and water retention. We work in partnership with neighbouring landowners to create a wider impact. An important feature of our work is encouraging a diverse range of people to connect with nature and to contribute to its restoration.
We are all aware of the crisis of biodiversity loss around the world, and in terms of native wildlife, the UK is one of the most depleted countries. At the same time, as we spend less time outside and more time online, people are becoming more and more disconnected from the land. Coetir Anian aims to reverse this loss in our part of Mid Wales, and to support and engage local communities while doing so, for the benefit of all.
The project is working together with neighbouring landowners and local communities to restore native forest and degraded peatland on and around our 140 hectare (450 acre) site on the edge of the Cambrian Mountains, increasing biodiversity, carbon sequestration and water retention. At the same time, groups of children and vulnerable adults are welcomed to the land, improving their well-being and building connection between our community and the natural world we rely on.
Our goal is a healthy, vibrant area of land that the local community feels connected to, and is part of a wider area of landowners co-operating to improve habitats while continuing to make a living from the land. Our work will be sensitive to and support local heritage and culture, and the Welsh language, which are intrinsic parts of this landscape. We hope to be an example of how projects like ours can inspire and help others to make choices that benefit nature and communities.
