Intellectual disability:Busting Myths in Colombia

Al llegar al final de cada año es imposible no mirar atrás para reflexionar sobre el trabajo realizado y el impacto alcanzado. Sin lugar a dudas el 2015 ha sido un año maravilloso, lleno de nuevas experiencias  y logros y aunque sabemos que aún nos falta mucho camino por recorrer para lograr erradicar los mitos acerca de las personas con discapacidad intelectual, nos sentimos orgullosos por la contribución que estamos haciendo, gracias a quienes apoyan esta causa.

En este año participamos en el acompañamiento y formación de 170 familias. A través del  programa de concientización con la campaña “Es un Mito y no lo permito”  se realizó la distribución de librillos, individuales y ubicación de murales con los cuales se logró tener impacto en más de 60.000 personas en las ciudades del Caribe Colombiano y 6.600 estudiantes se beneficiaron de los talleres que con el programa no hay2iguales, se realizaron a lo largo del año en 43 instituciones educativas de las ciudades de Barranquilla, Santa Marta y los municipios de Aracataca, El Retén, y Fundación.

Maestros como María Isabel Sosa Orientadora Escolar,  nos animan a seguir adelante al reconocer el trabajo que estamos haciendo:

“Deseo agradecer en nombre de nuestro Colegio y de las personas que de una u otra manera se benefician de su experiencia, el gran aporte que nos brindan a través de estos talleres, deseamos ser parte de este proceso de inclusión que tanto necesitamos para lograr una mejor sociedad y crecer como personas. A su vez, nosotros queremos transferir esta gratitud  a nuestros donantes, quienes con su ayuda incondicional hacen posible que continuemos mejorando la calidad de vida de las personas con síndrome de Down y discapacidad cognitiva.

At the end of each year it’s impossible not to look back and think about the work done and the impact achieved.  2015 has been a wonderful year, full of new experiences and achievements  and although we know that we still have a long way to go towards eradicating the myths about people with intellectual disabilities, we are proud of the contribution we are making, thanks to those who support this cause.

This year we participated in the orientation and training of 170 families and 350 teachers. Through our awareness campaign "It is a myth and It´s not permitted" the distribution of booklets, placemats and  murals made possible to have an impact on more than 60,000 people in the cities of the Colombian Caribbean Coast.

6.600 students benefited from the workshops of our program No2arealike  conducted throughout  the year in 43 educational institutions in the cities of Barranquilla, Santa Marta and the villages of Aracataca, El Retén y Fundación .

 María Isabel Sosa, Teacher and School Counselor, encourage us to move forward by recognizing the work we are doing:

You give us a great contribution through these workshops; we want to be part of this process of inclusion necessary  to achieve a better society and grow as a community.
