Build School for 80 Students in Arid Kachuru Kenya

Kachiuru primary school management and parents has not been successful in addressing latrines issue in the school and no progress has been made towards repairing of the collapsed latrines.  As earlier reported parents are not in a position to contribute towards repairing since the situation of their income has worsened and they have no reliable source of income as they are struggling hard to make the ends meet.  The school management committee has requested various well-wishers to help them repair the latrines but so far no positive response from either of them.  Pupils in the school are still sharing the few available latrines. We hope the situation will improve at some point.  Together with our partners Friends of Kenya Schools and Wildlife (FKSW) we will continue with feeding program for this term which has started today after April holiday.  This time it’s a bit challenging since most food stuff have increased in price and we had to adjust budgets to accommodate the extra costs of the food.  Feeding program is a very important intervention considering the prolonged drought in the area many parents are struggling to feed their families and having lunch in school has been motivating many children.  We are still fundraising for construction of a classroom and desks and we take this opportunity to thank all our well-wishers for their generous contribution towards Kachiuru community and we urge them to continue supporting the community as well as sharing with other potential well-wishers, we are optimistic that together we will improve lives of our less privileged communities.  Thank you very much as you join hands in community development network.

The school program resumed on 4th January 2017 after long December holiday. The school community started the term with a very serious issue of girls’ pit latrine collapsing and posing danger to the school community in terms of their health and injuries. This issue is very sensitive and requires urgent support to repair the latrines. At the moment boys and girls in the school are forced to share the few boys’ latrines in the school. The school management is trying to approach the local government institution to assist them in repairing the latrines but so far no positive response from various stakeholders. The management appeals to all well-wishers to support them in repairing the latrines. Parents and the community cannot raise funds for the same at the moment since they are going through very difficult situation due to prolonged drought in the area making it very difficult for them to provide food for their families. Although drought has affected most regions in the country, this year, Kachiuru is extremely affected since it has been very dry since last year and the community mainly depends on pastoralism for their livelihoods and at the moment their livestock are dying due to prolonged drought living them with very little for survival. We are happy that we have been able to sustain feeding program in the school therefore keeping many children in the school and relieve the parents in providing lunch to their children where many cannot afford 2 meals per day. Due to the drought the school garden is also affected and irrigation is not very sustainable at the moment since water is also scarce. We remain optimistic that the situation will improve soon.
The need for a classroom is still a challenge and the community is still pursuing the possibility of support by the Community Development Fund (CDF) and we hope they will be successful although they want to address the latrine matter first since it is more urgent. We invite all our well-wishers to consider joining us in supporting Kachiuru community.
Together with our partners Friends of Kenya Schools and Wildlife (FKSW), we have provided annual scholarships to the beneficiaries and they are proceeding on well. We hope to raise more funds to continue supporting the school and especially in infrastructures, desks and feeding program. We thank all those who have participated towards the achievements this far and encourage them and others to extend their support even more to Kachiuru primary school to improve learning environment in the school.
