Project Report | Mar 31, 2025
Greener Minds

By Olalekan Adeyanju | Project Officer

Forests play an indispensable role in global food security and environmental sustainability. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), forests cover approximately 31% of the Earth's land area, providing food, medicine, and livelihoods to over 1.6 billion people worldwide. These ecosystems not only support direct food sources—such as fruits, nuts, mushrooms, and game—but also play a crucial role in maintaining soil fertility, regulating water cycles, and promoting biodiversity, all of which are essential for sustainable agriculture.

Given these alarming trends, initiatives like Greener Minds, established by TGED Foundation, are crucial in fostering awareness and encouraging action toward forest conservation. By educating young students and engaging key stakeholders, the club aims to instill a deep understanding of how forests support food security and environmental sustainability.

On March 24, 2025, Greener Minds, an initiative of TGED Foundation had an  impactful program which  was held at Florence Court International School Ado Ekiti Ekiti State Nigeria, bringing together students, parents, teachers, and key stakeholders to highlight the critical role of forests in food security and environmental sustainability.

The program was designed to be interactive and educational, ensuring that participants—especially young students—could grasp the importance of forests in maintaining a healthy planet and a sustainable food system. Other activities on that day included:

1. Quiz Competition

Students participated in an engaging quiz competition that tested their knowledge about forests, biodiversity, and the connection between deforestation and food security. Questions covered a wide range of topics, from how forests contribute to climate regulation to their role in sustaining ecosystems that support food production. The quiz sparked curiosity, encouraged teamwork, and deepened the students’ understanding of the theme.

 2. Treasure Hunt

To make learning even more exciting, the event featured a forest-themed treasure hunt. Participants were divided into teams and given clues that led them to different stations, each representing an essential aspect of forests and their relationship with food. At each stop, they learned key facts about forest conservation, sustainable agriculture, and how indigenous communities rely on forests for nutrition.

3. Environmental Animation Screening

An animated short film created by the one of the members of Greener minds on deforestation, sustainable farming, and biodiversity conservation was showed to students and attendees. The animation used storytelling to illustrate how forests support agriculture by maintaining soil fertility, regulating water cycles, and providing habitat for pollinators that are essential for food production. The visual representation helped students grasp complex concepts in an engaging and relatable way.

5. Moonlight Tales

An engaging storytelling session—reminiscent of traditional moonlight tales—captivated students and attendees. The stories emphasized the deep cultural and ecological connection between humans and forests, reinforcing the need for conservation through folklore and indigenous knowledge.

6. Tree Planting Ceremony

One of the event’s highlights was a tree-planting session at designated locations within the school compound. This hands-on activity gave students a practical understanding of reforestation efforts and the role of trees in carbon sequestration, biodiversity conservation, and soil enrichment.

The progrma's success demonstrated the power of education in driving environmental action. Greener Minds, continues to lead the way in promoting sustainability, conservation, and responsible environmental stewardship. The program has sparked a lasting awareness that will inspire students and their communities to become active protectors of our forests.
