Summary

We aim to build Ghana's first women-led Domestic Violence Shelter in the Volta Region to offer protection, rehabilitation, and empowerment to survivors of domestic and partner abuse. Domestic Violence and Partner Abuse Project, initiated in partnership with a lecturer from Ball State University (USA), has organised impactful forums, trained police officers in trauma-informed victim response, and conducted community sensitisation programs. Now, we are building a shelter to provide safety for all.

Challenge

Domestic violence is a persistent and overlooked issue in Ghana. According to the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police, over 17,000 cases of domestic abuse were reported in 2021 alone. These numbers represent only a fraction, as many victims do not report due to stigma, fear, or lack of support. Shockingly, Ghana has only one government-run domestic violence shelter, located in Accra. Women in rural areas have no safe place to escape abuse and forced to endure.

Solution

We are building a shelter in the Volta Region, first-of-its-kind for the area, to provide emergency and transitional accommodation for women and children escaping abuse. The shelter will offer Safe Housing, Trauma Counselling, Legal support, Skillbuilding and Reintegration Programs. This initiative builds on our earlier work therefore, we will continue to organise Forums, Community Sensitisation, train more polices officers and the shelter will be a lifeline for women and children in Ghana.

Long-Term Impact

This shelter will create generational change by breaking cycles of abuse. Survivors will receive holistic support to rebuild their lives, while community education efforts will reduce stigma and prevent future violence. By investing in a survivor's future, we are also protecting children, strengthening families, and empowering communities. The shelter will serve as a beacon of hope and transformation, built on community resilience, international collaboration, and the strength of Ghanaian women.
