The Konkourona Alliance Foundation (KAFO), Inc and Mami Siara Na Association of Konkourona (MSN) will build a middle school in Konkourona, Burkina Faso. The number of students progressing to middle school in Konkourona has increased by approximately 15 fold as a result of the partnership between KAFO and MSN and there is currently no middle school in the village.
The closest middle school takes about two hours for students to get to by bike each day, so students are tired and at risk from exposure to heat and rain. In addition, terrorism is on the rise in Burkina Faso, with random attacks throughout the country being common.
A middle school in Konkourona will greatly reduce the distance students need to travel each day, which will increase the amount of time they spend studying, give them greater access to small class sizes, books, and tutoring, and reduce their risks of exposure to terrorists.
Providing education beyond elementary school is intended to open up many more job opportunities and promote continuous learning throughout the lives of the students. It is our wish that people will be able to choose meaningful work beyond subsistence farming that uses their unique skills. This will enable people to support their families and improve the world. In a region of the world plagued by poverty, suffering and terrorism, education will offer seeds of peace that we hope will spread.
