Nathan, 46, has been out of work since Covid 19 pandemic in 2020, one of thousands of young people in Uganda facing 17.9% youth unemployment. We're building him and other local youth a future: community catfish and tilapia ponds that will supply fresh fish to families and hotels who currently go without, in a country producing only 65,444 tonnes of farmed fish a year against far higher demand.
Nathan used to walk past the market daily hoping for work that never came. Like many young people here, he faces a country where youth unemployment stands at 17.9% (UBOS, 2025). Meanwhile, fish, a staple in local diets is getting harder to find. Uganda produces just 65,444 tonnes of farmed fish a year against an estimated national demand of 130,000 tonnes (UBOS/FAO, 2024-25), so hotels and families nearby depend on fish trucked in late and overpriced
We're giving Nathan and other local youth the chance to build something real: catfish and tilapia ponds, protected by a perimeter wall, fed by our own well and pump since the community has no running water. Nathan and a small team will run the farm, do feeding, harvesting, selling fish straight to households and nearby hotels who need it.
We want Nathan's story to repeat; more ponds, more youth trained and employed, less fish shortage, less unemployment. One farm, run by the people it feeds.
