Build a Community Fish Farm in rural Uganda

Summary

With youth unemployment at 17.9% (UBOS, 2025) and Uganda producing just 65,444 tonnes of farmed fish a year against roughly 130,000 tonnes of demand (UBOS/FAO, 2024-25), we are building catfish and tilapia ponds in Kyengera Town Council. The project will train and employ local youth, boost child nutrition through affordable fish protein, and grow into a self-funding model other communities can replicate

Challenge

Kyengera's population is growing fast, and demand for fish is rising with it, but the national supply gap means families and hotels nearby depend on fish trucked in from distant lakes often late, overpriced, or spoiled after days without refrigeration. Meanwhile, 17.9% of Uganda's youth are unemployed, with even less access to steady work in fast-growing towns like Kyengera. The area also lacks running water, which limits what income-generating farming is possible on small plots.

Solution

On a 50x100 feet plot, MOHCM will build catfish and tilapia ponds, following proven small-scale aquaculture practice: liming and fertilizing ponds to build up natural feed before stocking, then harvesting at market weight after 6-8 months. We will dig a well & install a pump for a steady water supply, build a perimeter wall to protect the stock, hire and train local youth to run daily feeding, water quality, and pond maintenance. Harvested fish will be sold fresh directly to community households

Long-Term Impact

Half of each harvest's profit will go directly to the families and youth running the ponds; the other half will be reinvested into restocking and building more ponds, letting the project fund its own growth. Over time, MOHCM aims to train and employ more young people, put a dependable source of fresh fish protein into more households supporting child nutrition and development - and build a replicable model for fighting youth unemployment and food insecurity through community-run aquaculture
