First kids walking into the new Club - so excited!

With your help, Boys & Girls Clubs of Huntington Valley made history this spring by opening California’s first Boys & Girls Club on a college campus! After more than 10 long years of planning and fundraising, and 18 months of construction, our new Boys & Girls Club at Golden West College finally has its doors open, welcoming kids from north Huntington Beach and the surrounding communities. We couldn’t have done it without your support. THANK YOU!

At the new Kingston Technology Family Campus, the Club now offers a continuum of care that spans programming for children as young as six weeks old at our Robert Mayer Child Development Preschool to high school students at our new Harry & Jaynne Boand Gymnasium and Pacific Life Foundation Branch School Age Center. Generations of kids will get to grow up on a college campus. This unique location will inspire kids to go on to college after high school and will also help moms and dads go back to school, with care for their kids right on campus.

200 of our community’s leaders gathered to celebrate the grand opening of the new site. Boys & Girls Club mom and State Senator Janet Nguyen gave remarks to the crowd and said, “Every dollar and penny you have given to help with the Boys & Girls Club, and all of the staff and volunteers, you’re helping children now know that college is not out of reach for them and that life can be better and that the American Dream is possible.”

From all of us at the Boys & Girls Club, including the generations of kids and their families who will benefit from the new Club for years to come, thank you for every dollar and penny donated. And thank you for every minute you’ve spent volunteering or spreading the word about the Club to your friends. You are making a big difference to the kids in our community who need it the most!

Our big day is almost here and we couldn't have come this far without you! Next Tuesday, April 26, we will offer tours of our brand new Boys & Girls Club on the Golden West College campus in Huntington Beach and have a special ribbon cutting ceremony at 6pm. Then, our new Boys & Girls Club will officially open its doors for our community's kids!

If you are local to our new Club in Huntington Beach, California, please join us! We would love to have you come to the grand opening and see for yourself what you have helped make possible for the kids in the community. You can RSVP by emailing eluong@bgchv.com. If you are far away, don't worry - we'll send you pictures soon!

A mom named Nicole whose son attends one of our other Huntington Beach locations says, "I work full time to support Morgan and myself. My job is at all times of the day.  Having Morgan at the Boys & Girls Club provides extended care when I have to work when he isn’t in school.  Without affordable care here, I wouldn’t be able to work, because I couldn’t afford childcare."

Thanks to you and the brand new Boys & Girls Club that your support is making possible, thousands more moms like Nicole will be able to get the affordable care that they need for their kids. And, I'm proud to tell you that it's not just affordable care, it's top quality care. In the last year, Boys & Girls Clubs of America has ranked Boys & Girls Clubs of Huntington Valley #1 in the nation for education programs, #2 in the nation for innovations in safety, and #1 in the nation for arts education. For all these awards, our organization was chosen from among more than 4,000 Boys & Girls Clubs nationwide. Thanks for helping us give the kids we serve the very best!

New Club in progress!
New Club in progress!

The big day is finally approaching! After many years of working toward a new Boys & Girls Club, it's almost complete. The doors to our new Club will officially open on March 28. The new Club will offer a full-day program for kids on spring break and then begin offering before and after school programs when kids are back in school. We couldn't be more excited to have our doors opening soon so we can give our community's kids all the very best programs. And they truly are the best programs - in 2015 our Club was ranked #1 in the nation by Boys & Girls Clubs of America for its education programs and #2 in the nation for safety. We're proud to give kids programming that is not only the best locally, but the best in the entire country. With the new Club, we'll be able to bring those top quality programs to another 2,500 youth in the next year.

The new site will make a big difference to parents, too. Jessica, one of the moms at our Huntington Beach Branch, says, "Thanks to the Club, I am also able to attend school to better my pay in the future. I just completed my Associate in Science and I am applying to pursue my BS. Knowing that my daughter is safe and loved means more to me than anything. Thank you for everything!”

This is a mom from one of our other Club sites that is not on a college campus. Imagine how many more parents like Jessica will be able to go back to school and get the education they need once the new Boys & Girls Club at Golden West College opens in March!

By supporting this project, you've already made a big difference to every child who will walk through the doors of the new Club you've helped build. Thank you for your generosity! If you'd like to help the new Club get ready to open, there are a lot of items on our wishlist that we could use your help with.

$10 buys a new book for the library.
$20 buys a basketball for the gym.
$45 buys a chair for the education center.
$130 buys a table for the art room.
$270 buys a learning station in the kindergarten room, like science, dramatic play, writing, and reading.
$600 buys a new computer for the technology lab.

These photos of kids at our other branches show the big difference you'll make by bringing the Boys & Girls Club to even more kids. Thank you again for all that you've done to open the doors to a new Boys & Girls Club and a great future for thousands of kids!

Ribbon cutting of new playground
Ribbon cutting of new playground

The Club’s new Family Campus is slowly but surely being built on the Golden West College Campus. One part of the construction process that didn’t go slowly at all is the new playground!

In just one day, 200 volunteers came together to build the new play structure, add wood chips so the kids have a soft surface to play on, put together picnic tables and benches for the Club’s new eating areas, put in raised garden beds, and so much more. To make this special build day possible, the Boys & Girls Club teamed up with KaBOOM!, a nonprofit that helps bring play spaces to kids in need around the country.

Michelle was one of the 200 volunteers who built the playground for the kids. In the planning process, she chaired the “play committee,” which was responsible for making build day fun for the volunteers. Michelle says, “A lot of planning went into this one big day. After weeks of conference calls and working hard to make everything possible for build day, it was really fun to see it all come together. My daughter comes to the Boys & Girls Club's Kingston branch in Fountain Valley. She really loves the Club and I’m glad to be part of making a play space for other kids like her in our community. Being part of this process also showed me how many people in this community care enough about kids like mine to do something that will really make a difference for them.”

I know that, just like Michelle and all the other volunteers who helped build the playground, you care enough to make a difference to Huntington Beach's kids, too. Your support is still needed. To help build the new Boys & Girls Club and give hundreds of kids each day a safe place to learn and play, please make your gift today!

New Club - Under Construction Now!
New Club - Under Construction Now!

A Club member named Sydney recently wrote about her experience at our Boys & Girls Clubs. I'd like to share with you what she said, because it really touched my heart and I think it will touch yours, too. Sydney writes, “When I walked into the Boys & Girls Club for the first time, I saw kids everywhere all grinning ear to ear. It seemed as though there were hundreds of rooms, filled with things devoted just for children. I was immediately filled with a sense of safety and excitement. As I started attending the Club regularly, it became a second home. I felt like I was safe there. No one looked down on me or treated me different because I was different. Without the Boys & Girls Club, I wouldn’t have found the light amidst the darkness.” Thank you for being a supporter of the Boys & Girls Club and making a difference to kids like Sydney.

Right now, our new Club is under construction - you can see in the photo here that the foundation is poured and the walls are starting to get framed up. Progress will move quickly from here and we expect that by late fall, we'll be opening the doors to our new Boys & Girls Club and a great future for kids like Sydney who need a light in the darkness and who need a place to feel safe. We're excited to be able to give 1,500 more kids a home away from home that's going to change their lives for the better. We can only do it because of you and your support!

As we reach the final months of construction, the need for your support is more urgent than ever. Would you consider making a gift today? Your $20 contribution could help us reach our goal of raising $1,500 more to fully fund our new playground. Your $50 contribution could buy several educational games for our activity center. Your $100 contribution will help us buy tables and chairs to equip the technology lab where kids will use 20 brand new laptops that were donated this month. A gift of any size makes a difference! Thank you for all you do to change the lives of children for the better - kids like Sydney thank you for showing them "the light amidst the darkness"!
